'The Host' Sequel Already In The Works

The Host just premiered on Tuesday at Hollywood’s Arclight Theater, and the word is out writer-turned-filmmaker Stephenie Meyer is already working on the sequel.

The Twilight author says she has begun penning the sequel to her sci-fi alien love tale, but because work on the first book and film, as well as some undisclosed family commitments, things haven’t been going so smoothly.

Based on Meyer’s 2008 novel of the same name, The Host tells of a frightening future in which aliens invade Earth, take over the bodies of most of the human population, and leave people with erased memories and weird blue eyes. The fate of humanity rests with a small group of survivors, who hide in caves and wage guerrilla warfare on the body snatchers.

Many years ago Meyer announced she had the sequel mapped out in her head, but it appears life – such as finishing up the last installments of her Twilight series ($3.3 billion worldwide) – has gotten in the way a little bit. In addition, Meyer and her company Fickle Fish Films are busy producing movies such as Anna Dressed in Blood, a young-adult ghost story from author Kendare Blake.

Although Meyer said she has “no idea when it will be done,” she’s going to “lock herself in her office to finish the sequel,” now that The Host will debut in theaters soon and some of her thoughts are already committed to paper. She also noted her intentions to make The Host a trilogy, but according to USA Today, she’s uncertain if that’s still going to happen.

The Host stars Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, William Hurt, Jake Abel and Diane Kruger. Andrew Niccol (Gattaca) directed and wrote the screenplay for the film which invades theaters March 29.
