Donald Trump has run into one presidential limitation he cannot negotiate away.
The restriction surfaced during another moment meant to honor someone else, when Trump once again made himself the main attraction.
The president’s bizarre fascination with shiny objects, grand titles, and prestigious honors has become a recurring part of his public persona.
Trump visited that inconvenient detail Thursday, Sept. 10, at the American Airlines Center in Arlington, Texas. He stood among 15 living recipients of the nation’s highest military decoration.
But the commander in chief learned he could not simply award himself the medal.

The award is reserved for service members whose bravery goes far beyond the call of duty. Apparently, being president does not come with an honorary shortcut.
Still, Trump found time to explain why he wanted to join their exclusive ranks.
“The thing I really want is I want for myself a Congressional Medal of Honor, and I’ve studied it and I will give it to myself. I have no problem, but I’m not allowed to. Can you believe it? The one thing I’m not allowed to do,” he said as the audience laughed.
“I would give myself, so it would make it instead of 15, we’d have 16,” Trump added.
Trump then offered a clarification. It only made the moment stranger, saying, “I’m only kidding.”
Then came the real confession: “Actually, I’m not kidding.”
The setting made the remark especially striking. Trump had just met with decorated service members and veterans, according to The New Republic.
But he used the occasion to nominate himself for the Medal of Honor, which recognizes extraordinary bravery. Recipients must distinguish themselves at the risk of their own lives. Their actions must go beyond the call of duty.
Trump never served in the military. He received multiple Vietnam-era draft deferments. One was a medical exemption for bone spurs.
Those details did not dim his fantasy. The company of people who earned the distinction gave him another chance to explain why he deserved one, too.
Viewers on X quickly delivered their brutal reviews of Trump, making another moment for others to talk about him.
“A Medal of Honor for what?” one social media user asked. “YOU aren’t in the military YOU haven’t fought in the military YOU haven’t done ANYTHING WORTHY to receive the Medal of Honor The only medal you’d be in the running for would be the Medal of DISHONOR.”
Another posted, “Because you don’t deserve it?”
More piled on, calling Trump everything from insane to “a disgusting manchild,” naming his remark an “insult, disguised as a ‘tribute.'”
“What kind of mad man says this?” asked one outraged person. Another said, “Ole bone spurs is showing disgusting disrespect to our soldiers.”
Trump’s words struck a nerve, with some viewers saying, “He means this.” Others argued, “They should have left when he said that. Staying and listening while he cheapens the medal they risked their lives for is embarrassing.”
Thursday’s declaration was not Trump’s first attempt to nominate himself.
In July, he discussed Theodore Roosevelt and his son. The two were among the rare father-son pairs to receive the Medal of Honor.
Trump then pointed toward Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump and said, “There are very few people that have them, you know, I want to give one to myself, but they tell me, and I’m not allowed to.”
He continued, “My son over here, both of them. I said, I’d love to give one of them to me. What have I done that to deserve it?’ and they couldn’t think of anything. So I’m not happy with them today.”
He later joked about selecting one son for his “genius at hunting.” Trump said he could receive a medal for enduring the Russia investigation. Neither Trump nor either of his sons has served in the military.
The medal theme also created outrage in May. He compared the Presidential Medal of Freedom with the Medal of Honor. Trump called the civilian award “much better.” He said its recipients were “healthy, beautiful” people.
He then contrasted them with wounded or deceased service members. Trump said Medal of Honor recipients had often been “hit so many times by bullets.”
Trump can sign legislation and present medals. The honor he keeps requesting remains out of reach. It is one prize he cannot order, inherit or award to himself.
