A name was all it took. Within seconds, loud boos erupted from the crowd before the speaker abruptly cut them off and made it clear they had completely misunderstood what they were reacting to.
The awkward moment unfolded Tuesday as Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo addressed supporters during a rally for President Donald Trump at Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas.
While recognizing a police officer who had been killed just hours earlier, Lombardo barely finished saying the officer’s last name before members of the crowd began booing.
The moment went viral online, with critics arguing it exposed how quickly the MAGA crowd reacted to a name they did not recognize before learning it belonged to a Marine veteran and Las Vegas police officer slain in the line of duty.
The moment became one of the most talked-about clips from the event, fueling accusations of bigotry while drawing renewed attention to Officer Austin Abdelnabi’s life and sacrifice.
As Lombardo addressed supporters, he began referencing remarks made earlier in the program.
“So I know the pastor spoke about Officer Abdelnabi,” Lombardo said.
Before he could continue, members of the audience interrupted with loud boos.
Lombardo immediately corrected them.
“No. We’re not booing him. He’s the officer that passed away here recently,” the governor said, according to reports.
He then asked the audience to observe a moment of silence in Abdelnabi’s memory.
The officer had been shot and killed while responding to a report of an armed suspect in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas on Aug. 4. Authorities said the suspect opened fire as officers arrived. Abdelnabi was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The suspect was killed at the scene.
Abdelnabi was a Marine Corps veteran who had served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for more than two years.
The viral clip prompted a wave of criticism across social media, where many users argued the crowd reacted to Abdelnabi’s name before understanding who he was.
One widely shared post read: “They are so utterly brainwashed, they don’t even know what the hell they’re doing. Like Pavlov, Trump’s trained these idiots to boo and chide without knowing anything whatsoever about what’s being discussed or any context. Fascinating and frightening, all at once.”
Another user shared a photograph of the fallen officer alongside the comment: “The Officer they’re booing because they assume he’s not white…another audience of degenerate.”
Others questioned how fast the crowd reacted.
“How are these people not ashamed of themselves, do they do any introspection,” one said.
Some commenters placed the blame directly on Trump and the political culture surrounding his rallies, with one writing, “Trump has done this to America. He made it okay for MAGAts to be degenerate filth and call everything they don’t like woke.”
Another post focused on Abdelnabi’s service record while accusing the crowd of judging him based on his name.
“Disgusting. They heard a name that doesn’t sound white and immediately started booing. He was a Marine veteran and local cop killed less than 24 hours ago while working to protect you ignorant people. They should be ashamed. Pure racism, nothing else. R.I.P. Officer Abdelnabi.”
While the motivations behind the audience’s initial reaction remain unknown, the incident drew widespread attention because it unfolded before Lombardo could explain whom he was referring to. The governor, a Republican and former sheriff who has often appeared alongside Trump, immediately intervened to stop the booing and redirected the crowd’s attention to honoring the fallen officer.
The tragedy itself continued to reverberate throughout Las Vegas.
Abdelnabi’s mother, Amy Harvey, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “He said he enjoyed working with the homeless, to make a difference. He gave selflessly to his job.”
The newspaper reported that investigators said the suspect “immediately opened fire upon officers” when police arrived.
Abdelnabi’s brother, Ryan Abdelnabi, also shared an emotional tribute on social media after learning of his brother’s death.
“There are moments in life that change you forever. Tonight is one of them. My brother was taken from us in the line of duty,” he wrote.
“It’s impossible to put into words the emptiness I feel knowing I’ll never hear his voice again, never get another phone call, never make another memory together. A piece of my heart left with him tonight,” Ryan also wrote.
By the end of the rally, the boos had given way to silence. But the brief misunderstanding — and the speed with which it happened — continued to dominate online discussion long after the crowd dispersed, even as many of those conversations returned to the life and service of the officer Lombardo had tried to honor.
