When it’s time for a red-carpet event, celebrities typically show up and out with their best ensembles. While many rise to the occasion of successful looks, a few fall flat.
Unfortunately for Lil Mama, several users have placed her in the fallen flat category.
The “Lip Gloss” rapper attended the 2023 BET Awards on June 25 and decided to enjoy her night out in an outfit inspired by Y2K fashion. For her top, Lil Mama rocked a black leather Von Dutch corset with white straps resting above her shoulders.
She paired the garment with low-rise silver leather pants which became wide-legged once they reached her feet. Her high-heeled shoes matched the color of her slacks, and a handbag rested on her side. For accessories, Lil Mama decided to wear different-sized rings on five fingers and a hefty watch on her left wrist.
The 33-year-old also wore an icy chain across her chest with her real name, “Niatia,” spelled out on it. As for her hair, Lil Mama’s jet-black coiled curls were styled in a half-up/half-down ponytail.
Though she kept her makeup simple with a natural brown eyeshadow, her noticeable contour snatched her cheekbones back, showing off her sculpted bone structure.
The Shade Room obtained the singer’s red carpet photo and shared it on Instagram. Soon afterward Lil Mama became the talk of Twitter, where users expressed being taken aback by her unrecognizable look.
“WHO TF IS THIS??????” one user wrote.
Many others gathered around in confusion, suggesting that the Lil Mama on the red carpet isn’t the same one audiences have grown to “know” and love.
“That ain’t the lil mama we know.”
“I did NOT recognize her.”
Nevertheless, there were also users who shamed folks for seemingly poking fun at Lil Mama’s appearance and encouraged critics to be kinder with their words on social media.
“Y’all are so mean to celebrity women… just about every woman goes through the phase of losing n gaining weight drastically. i can’t even imagine what’s she going through in her personal life so y would i judge her for something most women do..”
“She looks the same. Why y’all drag her so bad ?”

While Lil Mama has not addressed the criticism placed on her outfit, she did show love to her boo, 5ive Mics, who accompanied her to the event.
The two have been an item for over a year and have even collaborated on multiple songs together.
In 2022, Lil Mama was featured on Mics’ song “Bestuy,” and they rocked matching outfits while rapping about the greatness of New York, a city they were both raised in.
