Floyd Mayweather has done many amazing things in his career, including fathering five beautiful children; however, tying the knot doesn’t seem to be on the championship boxer’s to-do list.
The 45-year-old took to his Instagram page late Thursday night, Oct. 20, sharing a memo seemingly addressing those wondering when and if he’d ever take the preverbal walk down the aisle. “Everybody always asks me when am I getting married or why am I not married? I’m not married for the same reason the divorce rate is so high,” the note read. “The only person I will truly trust is myself. Therefore it eliminates disappointment.”
Mayweather clarified his statement in the caption, writing, “I have nothing against people who are married, these are just my personal beliefs,” before asking his followers, “What are your thoughts on marriage?”
The entrepreneur has four biological children, three of whom he welcomed with his late girlfriend, Josie Harris, and one with television star Melissa Brim. He also has one adopted son.
While many appeared to agree with the former pro’s perspective on eternal matrimony, several others expressed that the nature of the experience all depended on those involved, including one user who shared some advice with the veteran boxer writing, “The same wall we build to keep ourselves in also keeps others out.”
That person added, “It’s safer to just trust yourself but you can also be missing out on the beauty of trusting someone else who doesn’t disappoint.”
Another critic commented, “It’s what you make out of it !! But Life is designed to Enjoy with A Queen … It’s Like Chess.” A third person joked, “Marriage is good when u found the right one. But with your status, u probably gonna have to relive Eddie Murphy, coming to America [in] disguise.”
It’s unclear what sparked Mayweather to share the post, but it comes during a rough time for Hollywood’s love department. Over the last several weeks, many couples have announced that they would be parting ways after several years together.
Earlier this month, “Sister, Sister” star Tia Mowry filed for divorce from her husband Cory Hardrict in a Los Angeles court after 14 years of marriage, leaving fans stunned. The actors were together for 22 years and share two children, a son named Cree and a daughter named Cairo.
Around the same time, legendary singer Faith Evans followed through with her plans of divorcing music producer Stevie J. The pair did not have an easy relationship, which has included a November 2021 divorce filing from Stevie three years into their marriage, with Faith arrested the year before that for attacking him.
Other couples who have called it quits include former “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Cynthia Bailey and her husband, Mike Hill, and singer Ne-Yo and his wife, Crystal Renay. Singer Miguel and his wife Nazanin Mandi called it quits this month after three years of marriage and 17 years together.
