Taye Diggs is getting into the business of reality television. The actor has been tapped as the host of a new dating show called “Back in the Groove,” which is set to stream on Hulu sometime in the near future.
The unscripted show will follow three women, 43-year-old Sparkle from Atlanta; 41-year-old Steph from Miami; and 42-year-old Brooke from Los Angeles, as they seek to break out of their day-to-day lives and tap into love.
The women will be staying at The Groove Hotel in the Dominican Republic, where their prospective love interests are half their age. The premise of the show and its name are all a play on Diggs’ first film, “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” where he starred as the 20-something love interest of Angela Bassett’s character, 40-year-old Stella.
“As the saying goes, you can’t fall in love with someone else until you fall in love with yourself! At the Groove Hotel, these three women will have the opportunity to do both! Whether they find the perfect fling, friendship, true love, or something in between, this is their chance to take charge and break through the double standards older women face every day. And they’re going to have a lot of fun doing it!” said Hulu in its announcement.
The “All American” actor also shared the new gig with his followers on social media. As expected, his fans jumped at the chance to bring up the 1998 film and its ties to Diggs’ new gig.
Some of their comments included: “Stellas getting their groove back,” “Live action How Stella got her groove back,” “Stella gets her groove back all over again,” and “Ok, I see what you did there Winston!!!”
Other commenters questioned how they missed out on the opportunity to sign up, and others said there was no way they would entertain dating someone 20 years younger than them.
“Normalize grown folk dating shows cuz lawdddd it ain’t easy!”
“Yay! Congrats for this! Will legally changing my name to Stella help my chances of getting on the show for next season?”
“I would say where do I sign up but I’m not with dating a man half my age . Nope.”
“Umm… I was with it until it stated men HALF THEIR AGE. Who has time FOR THAT?!”
Diggs, 51, is currently dating former “Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood” cast member Apryl Jones, 35. The duo has had fans wrapped up in their unique pairing since early this year, leaving at least one person to comment, “I want the April & Taye Show!!” For now, at least, fans will have to keep tuning into the couple’s hilarious posts on social media.
