‘So Aaliyah Never Existed Huh?’: Social Media Reacts to Magazine Crediting Kim Kardashian for the Side-Part Hairstyle

In 2020, Aaliyah fans came for Kim Kardashian ripping off the late singer’s Roberto Cavalli look. Now, fans are at her again after Nylon Magazine credited the SKIMS creator for bringing back popularity to a hairstyle frequently worn in the 1990s.

According to the article, teenagers on TikTok declared the side part dead two years ago — even though no one else did. Two days ago, Kim began sharing photos of her new icy blond hair, parted to the side and covering one eye. The outlet wrote, “Kim Kardashian is using her power as the ultimate influencer to bring back a hairstyle the internet claimed to have left behind.”

As the headline circulated online, fans had a lot to say in the comments section of The Shade Room’s post. Many mentioned that the hairstyle is still as prevalent as it was over 30 years ago.

“The side part never left oh Kimberly,” said one person, while another added, “Been wearing the side part since ’91!!! Girl stop!!!” A third person specifically commented on Kim’s hair, writing, “That’s not even a good side part…”

A few critics began shading Kim, but many felt the fire should be directed at Nylon Magazine. One person wrote, “Y’all she didn’t write the article. Eat the blog up not her.”

Another said, “These vlogs know how to get y’all up tight!!! It’s sick! She didn’t say it they did!”

Noting Rolling Stone UK’s recent “King of Pop” cover featuring Harry Styles, the artist to whom the magazine has given that title, one individual said, “These magazines be setting these celebrities up for failure from Harry Styles being called King of pop to this.”

Meanwhile, hundreds credited the late singer Aaliyah for popularizing the side part in the 1990s. The world of R&B and pop took a serious blow when the “One in a Million” singer died in 2001, at 22. Yet 21 years later, women and young girls are still imitating her coveted side-part hairstyle and the deep swoop over the eye. Here’s what a few had to say.

“So Aaliyah never existed huh?”

“I love Kim but wtf … Aaliyah did it best honey.”

“Don’t ever disrespect Aaliyah like dat.”

“If someone was to hold that title it would be Aaliyah even though the style was out before her lol.”

“Aaliyah is the queen of the side part! Stop playing.”

Thursday, Aug. 25 marks the 21st anniversary of the death of R&B Princess Aaliyah. The Grammy-nominated vocalist was killed during a tragic plane crash in the Bahamas, along with eight others. She went to the island to shoot scenes for “Rock The Boat,” which would be the last music video she filmed and released. Between her 1994 album, ‘Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number,’ and her 2001 self-titled project, the New-York born, Detroit-raised star worked with power players in the music industry such as Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat, Ginuwine, Tank and others.
