In a sneak-peek episode preview with “Drink Champs” for Revolt TV, singer Chris Brown revealed that rapper and producer Sean “Diddy” Combs turned him down before he became a star.
During the interview Chris stated, “A lot of people don’t know this: Diddy turned me down. I was 12 years old,” he continued. “It was me and one of my production manager’s sons, T.J.”
Chris further explained how they were a group but didn’t have a name for their group, which caused one of the show’s hosts to joke with Chris and say, “That’s why he [Diddy] didn’t sign y’all. Y’all didn’t have y’all s–t together.”
Fans were surprised by this little snippet, but many interpreted it as an impetus for Chris to stay motivated in his work and his rise to fame. One fan commented, “He had to take that as motivation!” Another fan said, “God blocked it! A new opportunity! A blessing in disguise.” Someone else had said, “Rejection is protection!”
Some other fans were happy that the “This Christmas” star was turned down by Diddy because they believed Diddy would have hurt his career. One fan wrote, “None of his artist make it far, so this was a good thing.”
Another commented, “Good!! Because boy I feel like he wouldn’t be where he is today man!”
The superstar was only 15 years old when he was signed to Jive Records — he is now signed to RCA Records. He rose to fame after the release of his debut self-titled album “Chris Brown” in 2005. His album ascended on the charts, and his first single, “Run It,” became a major hit that got the young star many musical nominations.
Chris Brown’s talent not only as a singer but as a dancer made people begin to compare him to other artists such as Usher and King of Pop Michael Jackson. In 2010, Chris performed a tribute to the late pop star Michael Jackson during the BET Awards.
Since his rise to fame Chris has been nominated for many awards, which include a few Grammy nominations.
While Diddy may have rejected Chris Brown, that didn’t hinder him from becoming a star. All in all, Chris ended up describing his journey as “a blessing” and is very close with Diddy to this day.
