Steph Curry’s Mom, Sonya, Files For Divorce from His Father Dell, After 33 Years of Marriage

Steph Curry‘s parents, former NBA player Dell Curry and his wife Sonya, are getting divorced after 33 years of marriage following a quiet trial separation that led to their decision.

Sonya, 55, reportedly filed the legal documents in their home state of North Carolina on June 14, and the couple later released a statement revealing that the action came after their 2020 trial separation.

The longtime couple is calling it quits for unspecified reasons, but maintains that they are remaining as committed to their family as they have been — they’ll just be doing it from separate households. “After exploring a trial separation over the past year and much thoughtful consideration, we have decided to end our marriage,” the pair told People in a joint statement. “As this comes with a great deal of sadness, our focus and desire is for our family’s continued happiness.”

“We are so thankful for all the many blessings and successes!” they continued. “We stay committed to and supportive of our children and grandchildren and will remain on connected paths. We ask that our privacy be respected and prayer for our family as we move forward.”

The 57-year-old retired baller and Sonya met while attending Virginia Tech, where she played volleyball and he played basketball for the university. They were married in 1988 and have three children together, including Steph. Their son Seth plays for the Philadelphia 76ers and daughter Sydel is married to Golden State Warriors shooting guard and Steph’s teammate Damion Lee.

During their marriage, the couple also founded the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman in 1995, which all three of their children attended.

At the time of this article’s writing, none of the Curry siblings has reacted to news of their parents’ divorce publicly.
