Beyoncé is providing some much-needed relief to those in her home state of Texas.
On Thursday, Feb. 18, the Houston native announced that her BeyGOOD Foundation was partnering up with athletic giant Adidas and Houston disaster relief organization “Bread of Life” to offer financial assistance to Texas residents currently suffering from the effects of winter storm Uri.
“Visit @BreadflifeH for more information on assistance,” the post read. “We send our prayers to those impacted by the winter storm.”
Those in need are encouraged to apply using the organizations’ Disaster Relief Assistance Application Form, which, if approved, will grant individuals up to $1,000 in aid. Those who are able can also donate to Bread of Life to provide further assistance to those in need.
Beyoncé’s sister and singer, Solange Knowles, also encouraged her base to help out. The “Seat at the Table” songstress recently donated to a mutual aid fund in Houston.
“We are so grateful to @solangeknowles for her significant donation to our post-freeze housing relief efforts,” the Mutual Aid Houston Twitter account shared. “The Houston love is REAL. #houstonFreeze.”
The singer reshared the post, writing, “sending so much love back home 🖤 and im committed to doing more…” She added, “My heart breaks man thank you for all the endless work you guys are doing on the ground.”
The winter storm hit the Southern state last week, leaving millions of residents without water and power as the rare-for-Texas weather event overwhelmed the state’s independent power grid, which had not been properly winterized despite years of warnings that it was vulnerable. At least 36 people have died as a result of the storm and its aftermath.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz faced backlash after he and his family traveled to Cancun, Mexico, last week after losing power at their home. The 50-year-old was photographed at an airport as he checked in for his flight. The politician was initially scheduled to return from his impromptu vacation on Sunday, Feb. 21, but was shamed into returning on Friday due to the public criticism.
Cruz addressed the backlash, stating, “This has been an infuriating week for Texans. Like millions of Texans, our family lost heat and power too. With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon.” He added, “My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas. We want our power back, our water on, and our homes warm. My team and I will continue using all our resources to keep Texans informed and safe.“
