Tyler Perry stepped up in a major way to help a group of restaurant workers. Perry gave 42 servers at Houston’s in Atlanta each a $500 tip, totaling $21,000.
The generous gift comes at a time when a lot of restaurant staff isn’t able to work because of the current pandemic.
TMZ reports the tip was left at the Houston’s located on Northside Parkway, since Perry has been grabbing pick-up orders there during his shelter-in-place days.
Perry has a history of helping out during times of struggle, as in 2019 when he assisted residents of the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian hit.
At that time, he filled his personal plane with water, food, diapers and other supplies, shortly after letting the country know that he’d send help.
Perry also pledged to give $1 million to relief efforts on behalf of Houston, Texas, after Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Seven years prior, in 2010, he pledged the same amount to the people of Haiti after an earthquake there.
Perry received the People’s Choice Favorite Humanitarian Award in 2017 during the fifth-annual People’s Choice Awards.
He also has received praise for work through The Tyler Perry Foundation, which Perry started in 2006 to “transform tragedy into triumph by seeding individual potential,” according to the foundation’s website.
On the entertainment end, he made history in 2019 when he became the first African-American to own his own film studio outright, with no partners or outside backing.
On October 5 of that year, for the opening, he threw a huge bash with celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, as well as Cicely Tyson in attendance.
Additionally, in June 2019, Perry received the Ultimate Icon-Award at the 19th-annual BET Awards for his “continued cultural impact in entertainment,” as described by the network.
Perry hasn’t mentioned the gift that he gave to the workers at Houston’s yet, on either his Instagram or Twitter pages.
