Serve: Naomi Osaka Has Her Own Docuseries on Netflix Coming

Naomi Osaka has a docuseries coming that will stream on Netflix.

Variety reports that it will show Osaka’s journey to last year’s U.S. Open and show her play in this year’s Grand Slam tournaments. She’ll be seen training for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as well.

A title for the project hasn’t been revealed yet, nor a release date. But the 22-year-old said the piece won’t be your run of the mill sports doc.

“To be able to tell my story and let people in during this big year, working with a team that really understands me, has been a rewarding experience,” said Osaka in a statement. “It won’t look like a traditional sports documentary, and I’m so excited to share it with everyone.”

The docuseries is attached to LeBron James and Maverick Carter‘s Uninterrupted, a brand they created in 2015 that allows athletes to connect with their fans through “content, merchandise, events, partnerships and educational opportunities,” according to the brand’s description.

The docuseries will also be produced by the company Film 45 and directed by Garrett Bradley.

Osaka, who was born to a Japanese mother and a Haitian father, is currently ranked 10th in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association. She was recently beaten at the Australian Open by 15-year-old Coco Gauff, which was considered a major upset.

The two also played at the U.S, Open in 2019, where Osaka defeated Gauff and comforted her afterward when the teen broke down in tears. Osaka — who represents Japan on the court — was praised for showing such compassion, and the touching moment made headlines.

In regard to the docuseries, it will show Osaka heading to Japan to gain a deeper level of understanding about her Japanese heritage. It’ll go into her multicultural upbringing as well.

Outside of tennis, Osaka released a capsule collection with Japanese label ADEAM which she recently debuted at New York Fashion Week
