Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ Ties Songs by Mariah Carey, Luis Fonsi for Longest No.1

Last week Lil Nas X achieved a major accomplishment by having his song “Old Town Road” become the longest-reigning No. 1 debut single ever on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

And now X has accomplished another feat, because he’s tied Mariah Carey and singer Luis Fonsi for having the longest running No. 1 single of all time.

Both Carey’s 1995 cut “One Sweet Day,” featuring Boyz II Men, and Fonsi’s 2017 “Despacito,” featuring rapper Daddy Yankee, spent a total of 16 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100, which X tied this week.

If “Old Town Road” sits on top of the Hot 100 for a 17th week, it would be the only song in Billboard’s 61-year-old chart history to do so.

It’s something the 20 year old seems pretty excited about and wants to happen badly. Because on Monday, he posted a clip of the “SpongeBob SquarePants” character Squidward Tentacles mouthing the words “Please stream ‘Old Town Road.'”

He also captioned the clip.

“Me on the internet this whole week tryna break the billboard record,” wrote X.

Back in March, it was announced that Billboard removed “Old Town Road” from its Hot Country Songs list because it didn’t sound country enough.

The cut was the first ever to land on that chart, as well as the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at the same time. And many said X being Black was the reason the song was removed.

But now since the rapper is on the verge of breaking another Billboard record, his fans seem eager to help him do it.

“I really hope you break the record,” one of his fans wrote on Instagram.

“We gotta do it for the culture,” another person wrote.

Last week “Old Town Road”also became the longest No. 1 song of an openly gay artist.
