Nipsey Hussle was honored during the 2019 ceremony with T.I., who is carrying on his legacy by doing work for the Black community. The Atlanta-based MC remembered the late rapper for his philanthropy and Nipsey’s family, including girlfriend Lauren London and mom Angelique Smith, took the stage to accept the award on his behalf.

Tyler Perry’s Moving Speech Has Folks on Their Feet

Tyler Perry discussed how the Confederate origins of his south Atlanta film studio came to be and his rousing speech led to a standing ovation from the crowd.

“While everybody else is fighting for a seat at the table, talking about ‘#OscarsSoWhite, #OscarsSoWhite,’ I said, ‘Y’all go ahead and do that. While you’re fighting for a seat at the table, I’ll be down in Atlanta building my own,'” he said to eager applause.

Mary J. Blige Takes Us All the Way Back

Mary J. Blige was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award and in her 20-minute set, she brought out lots of old school collaborators in the process. Lil Kim and Method Man made special appearances to perform “I Can Love You” and “You’re All I Need” respectively.

Offset Busts a Move

Fans were reminded of Migos rapper Offset’s dancing past at the show when he broke it down on stage during his performance of “Clout.” The choreography he busted out was undoubtedly inspired by Michael Jackson.

Breakout star Lizzo had viewers at home and in the audience vibing with her performance of “Truth Hurts” as she stood atop a wedding cake in a bridal lingerie set. She wasn’t afraid to shake it, and fans ate up the performance.

Lil Nas X Hits the Stage with Billy Ray Cyrus

After collaborating with Billy Ray Cyrus on the remix to “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X brought the country star to the BET Awards. It was complete with an intro of the duo riding horses into the Staples Center where the show took place.
