Despite her best attempts, Kevin Hart has made it clear he’ll never accept Tiffany Haddish trying to return the $300 he gave her back when she was living out of her car in 2005.
The co-stars of “The Secret Life of Pets 2” chatted about the now-famous story during a recent promotional event. Speaking to Essence, Hart humorously said he won’t take the money because he needs something to keep Haddish on her toes.
“No! Because then what would I have to hang over her head? Absolutely nothing,” he said. “I need something that I can bring up from time to time. So, no!”
“I’m not going to take the money so every chance that I get I can go, ‘Hey! You know what’s crazy? You still owe me that $300. … I don’t want the money back,” he added with a laugh.
For those who are not familiar, Hart shared the story of how he lent Haddish the funds on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last year.
“I knew Tiffany when Tiffany was homeless,” he explained. “Tiffany was living out of her car and nobody knew. She was trying to keep it a secret … Something wasn’t sitting right and I said ‘Yo, you alright? Is everything OK with you?’ She was like ‘Yeah, I’m fine.’”
After finally learning that his now-two-time co-star was homeless, he gave her $300 to help her get on her feet.
“I later found out that the money she took, she went and got a motel, was able to stay there for like a week, use a proper bathroom. Never told me,” Hart said.
In the years since then, Haddish has made bold attempts to repay the comic. As the two promoted the comedy film “Night School” last year, the star burst in on Hart’s on-set interview and exclaimed, “I’m making it rain on you.”
Hart shared the moment on his Instagram page and relayed in the caption how he managed to get the cash back in Haddish’s possession.
“What she doesn’t know is that I put the money back in one of her wig caps that she wasn’t wearing later that day!!!!” he said. “I’m dead serious. Check your wig cap @tiffanyhaddish ….I love u and I will never take from you. You being my Co-Star in my movie ‘Night School’ was more than enough.”
Haddish found the money and vowed to get Hart the money back no matter what.
“Are you serious? Am I gonna have to fight you to give you this money back?” she exclaimed in the video.
“Thank You very much. But You getting this money back,” she wrote in the caption. “I am paying you back! I pay all my loans off. That is something you and my Grandma taught me ‘never owe nobody money.’”
