New pics Tamar Braxton shared to her Instagram page Thursday night have fans comparing her to La Toya Jackson due to her lightness.
Braxton made her debut as part of Kandi Burruss‘ “Welcome to the Dungeon” tour in Chicago May 2 and shared a few pics of her costume ahead of the show. While fans initially began to praise her for her appearance, the comments soon devolved into questioning why she looked so fair-skinned.
“I did this tour because my friends said that ‘don’t nobody know u have that body underneath all those church clothes’ 😩😂😂😂 ion care I’m STILL saved… I’m an actress in playing a role🤷🏽♀️ #meandjesustalkedaboutit😉🤷🏽♀️ #kandidungeonparty,” Braxton captioned her post, which saw her clad in a blond wig, sailor hat and white lingerie.
At first, praise began flooding Braxton’s feed.
“Yassss🔥🔥🔥🔥”
“That girl Tay tay🔥🔥🔥 💣💣💣 I see you.”
“YAAAASSSSS TATA!!! PUSHIN’ THRU WITH SOME #tamartians LOVE💙❤️😍🔥”
“🔥🔥🔥 Everybody was here for it actress!!!! Sometimes you gotta let me know what you’re working it!”
But soon other fans began to wonder why Braxton appeared so light-skinned. They mistook her for a white woman and compared her to LaToya Jackson, who in addition to having fair skin has said she adores wearing sailor hats.
“Damnnnn she white white 👀👀👀👀👀????? @jacobwillisofficial ummm is that Becky!!! What’s going on here!?????”
“Who that white lady in the first picture?”
“LaToya Jackson making a come back!”
“LaToya Jackson realness!!!!”
“You look like LaToya Jackson.”
Braxton even drew comparisons to Christina Aguilera, who rocked a sailor hat and a bold red lip in her 2006 video for “Candyman.”
“B—- I thought I started following Christina Aguilera 😭”
This is far from the first time Braxton’s skin tone has come into question, although before fans accused her of taking more permanent measures than makeup or photo filters to lighten her complexion.
The star has long been plagued by rumors of bleaching her skin, which dates back to when she made her reality TV debut on WEtv’s “Braxton Family Values” in 2011. However, the star told Essence magazine in 2013 that her apparent lightness stems from the fact that she has vitiligo, a disorder that results in loss of color on patches of the skin.
“I’ve always had it since I was a young girl” she said. “It’s not as bad as others because everybody has it differently, but I’ve certainly had mine diagnosed. That’s why I tan. People say, ‘You bleach your skin!’ But I tan just so I can have a better tone on my skin, boo!”
Saying that the condition became worse when she got pregnant with her son Logan that year, she said the diagnosis “is hard.”
“It does weigh on your self-esteem. It really does,” she continued. “But I’m done defending that. I’m not bleaching my skin and if I was bleaching my skin and I felt like saying so, I would, but for the record, I am not.”
