A musical on Destiny’s Child is on its way, and it’ll be overseen by Beyoncé‘s father Mathew Knowles, who managed the group until they disbanded in 2006.
Knowles didn’t only manage Destiny’s Child, but he eventually quit his full-time job to do so and was largely responsible for getting them signed to Columbia Records in 1997.
The new project, which is called “Survivor: The Destiny’s Child Musical,” will be written by Je’Caryous Johnson, whose past work includes a stage play of the 1996 film “Set It Off.”
The musical will premiere in Houston next year and has plans to be on Broadway, as well as London’s West End.
“I want to pull back the curtain,”said Knowles in a press statement. “I feel it’s time to give the world an opportunity to hear, see and feel the victories and failures that I’ve had as a husband, father and manager who risked everything in pursuit of fulfilling dreams — those of mine and others.”
It’s been said that Beyoncé won’t be involved in the making of the musical, it’ll be told from the perspective of Knowles. Plus, it won’t hide the low moments of the group’s career and will show the “achievements, obstacles and evolution” they’ve experienced.
It also seems the musical will show how shaping Destiny’s Child affected Knowles’ marriage. Knowles and Beyonce’s mother Tina Knowles-Lawson divorced in 2011 after 31 years of marriage.
“Ultimately, the story shares the message that building a dream takes sacrifice, even at the cost of everything and everyone you love,” the press statement reads.
Johnson also talked about the musical and said writing it is incredibly special for him, since he’s from Houston just like the group.
“It is my mission to tell the stories of our legends and cement their legacies in the history of our world,” he stated. “But this one is very dear to me. As a native Houstonian, I have a special affinity for Destiny’s Child because we are from the same city and it is one that breeds greatness.”
“I can assure their fans and mine that I will give everything I have to this story and will make sure it is the greatest show they ever experience,” added Johnson.
Destiny’s Child first began their professional career with four members, Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson, but Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams replaced Luckett and Roberson in the year 2000.
Franklin later left the group, leaving the most popular lineup of Beyoncé, Rowland and Williams.
“Survivor: The Destiny’s Child Musical” is set to premiere in Houston next year.
