Rapper Maino‘s attempt to help his girlfriend Maggie Carrie with her post-traumatic stress disorder had some viewers up in arms during the latest “Love and Hip Hop: New York” episode.
Maino and his girlfriend made their introduction together for the first time on the VH1 reality show and spoke openly about the hardships they’ve overcome in their relationship, including the model’s struggles with mental health.
Just weeks after the couple began dating, Carrie was the victim of a shooting at a May 2016 New York concert in which Maino was the opening act for T.I. She was wounded in the leg and had trouble walking following the incident. The incident — which saw four people wounded and one man killed — left Carrie with an extreme case of PTSD.
“It’s a lot for me, something about the crowds — I just feel so vulnerable,” the model confessed in her green screen. “I try my best every day to move forward, but it’s not easy. I keep thinking about the ‘what-ifs’ and what could possibly happen, and to be honest, it’s kind of holding me back.”
Maino tried helping his girlfriend by taking her back to the place where she was shot, which caused Carrie to break down into tears. He also kept stressing how important it was for her to overcome her fear and called the shooting “one bad night.”
Many “LHHNY” viewers felt Maino tried to downplay Carrie’s PTSD and didn’t take mental illness seriously.
“Maino really needs to educate himself on PTSD. It’s not about one bad night ruining anyone’s life. She got shot. It’s not easy to get pass.”
“Is it me, are they acting like getting shot is not a big thing… get over it and move on.”
“Maino.. there is nothing wrong with you trying to help Maggie get over her PTSD but PLEASE don’t rush her. It takes time with stuff like that.”
Other fans defended Maino and applauded him for being a “sweet” boyfriend. Fans felt he was only trying to support Maggie’s struggles with PTSD and not make it worse.
“Maino is doing amazing! This is how you support your Queen! Protect her and let her know everything will be alright!”
“Maino is a GOODT man! Him and Maggie are so cute. He’s so caring and compassionate towards her. He’s trying to help her if anything!”
