The second episode of Michelle Williams’ new show “Chad Loves Michelle” airs this weekend on OWN.
The reality series follows the Destiny Child’s singer and her husband Chad Johnson as they prepare to get married and seek counseling along the way. Michelle’s battle with depression is also discussed on the show.
In the promotional clip for the second episode, the couple revealed they had an argument and race was brought up by Michelle, which Chad didn’t like.
“I said something to him on the lines of ‘Well, Chad, because you are not Black you would not understand why I communicate the way I do. Maybe because you didn’t grow up around a lot of Black people.’ So that was very, very offensive to Chad,” Michelle recalled.
In fact, Chad was so offended that he brought up his fiancée being a mental health patient just to anger her.
“And this is not to justify it, but yesterday when we had the disagreement, he said ‘Did you take your meds today?’” Michelle told the counselor.
Chad said he apologized for the remark and admitted that he lost his temper, but it had everything to do with his future wife bringing up their racial differences.
After the clip surfaced, one person said Michelle had every right to mention race, and it’s nothing Chad should’ve been mad about about.
“I don’t understand what was wrong with what she said to him,” that person wrote. “She can’t ignore race and become color blind, even if he tries too. It’s just a part of life.”
But others said both were wrong: Michelle for bringing race up in the middle of an argument and Chad doing the same with mental health.
“Michelle has said before that she likes to go for the jugular,” another person commented. “The race thing is an easy low blow, though. Personally, I don’t see it as that bad of a hit. ‘Did you take your meds today?’ Now, that one I’ve heard plenty of times.”
