Maybe Paula Patton could learn a lesson from Jada Pinkett Smith on this one.
The “Girls Trip” star seemed to confess to husband Will Smith’s ex-wife Sheree Fletcher that she wished she hadn’t begun dating the “Bright” actor before his marriage to Fletcher was officially over.
“The beginning between us was rough,” Smith tells Fletcher at the 3:27 mark on the premiere episode of “Red Table Talk” Monday, May 7. “And here’s the one thing I will say now in hindsight. Because I did not understand marriage, I didn’t understand divorce. I will say that I probably should’ve fell back.”
“You think?” Sheree responds in a jokingly sarcastic tone.
Smith, who started dating her rapper-actor spouse in 1995 before he ended his three-year marriage with Fletcher, explained that she thought things were simply put in the past with Fletcher, despite the pair having a young son, named Trey.
“That’s where I was wrong,” she says. “Now, being a married woman and if Will and I were to get divorced now — my God! So when I think back on where I was, some of my insensitivity, some of my inconsideration just in regards to you guys unwinding a marriage. And then me trying to get in there and like … ‘So this what we need to do.’”
Online, several people weighed in on Smith’s revelation.
“Not sure [I] will ever understand, that a woman seeing a married man is not the one, and only perpetrator, the man was the one married, why he didn’t stay away from her?” someone commented. “She wasn’t right, but he was worse. He was committed to a woman and didn’t care much about it.”
“I did that once and feel the same way, I don’t want to date someone married or going through a divorce at all, it is too much stress,” said someone else sharing their personal story. “And it hurts the other female. It’s OK, time changes things and people move on but somehow or another it still hurts someone.”
Others felt Smith was speaking to falling back in other ways.
“She never said that. She was talking about falling back regarding how to raise her stepson,” someone else posted. “I can’t believe I am about to say this, but…fake news.”
Another wrote, ” I need to rewatch. I did not hear her say that she dating Will while he was married. I got from it that they dating while the divorce was fresh.”
