Dame Dash Explains Why ‘Things Would Have Been Different’ if He Was Present Before Aaliyah’s Death

In an episode set to air today, hosts of The Real ask producer Dame Dash about how he said the death of his then-girlfriend Aaliyah and his mother turned him into a monster. He tells the panel if he were there that day in August 2001, things would have been different.

Dash says Aaliyah had reservations about the plane she was taking to the Bahamas. He told her not to go, but due to the “complicated situation,” she had to fly to shoot her video for her song “Rock the Boat.”

“If I was there, I would have made sure that that jet that was supposed to be for her, you know that G4, she would have been on that,” Dash tells The Real hosts. “I wouldn’t have got on that plane, you know what I’m saying? So it probably would have been different. But you know um, everything happens for a reason. You know, and what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and you just gotta deal with the cards that life deals you.”
