Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged fellow African leaders to stop receiving foreign aid, saying it is not an acceptable basis for prosperity.

“Dependency on giving that only appears to be charitable must end,” he said in a tweet ahead of this weekend’s African Union summit in South Africa.

The BBC’s Robert Kiptoo in Kenya says it is not a government policy but a rallying cry for African leaders.
Aid is believed to account for 5 percent to 6 percent of Kenya’s total income.

Kenyatta said that foreign aid “often carries terms and conditions that preclude progress.”

“It is time to give it up,” he wrote.

While Kenya does receive a lot of aid, it did survive for four years without foreign assistance after Western countries suspended their aid in 1991 to express their anger with then-President Daniel arap Moi.

The United States, European Union and the United Kingdom are the biggest donors to Kenya.
Since Kenyatta came to power in 2013, he has had an uneasy relationship with the West.

He was accused by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of crimes against humanity for allegedly inciting post-election violence in 2008, in which more than 1,200 Kenyans were killed.

But the case was dropped last year after the prosecutor’s office said it didn’t have enough evidence to prove his criminal responsibility.

  1. The details are always in fine print. Print that you cannot read but strips you and your country of its natural resources.

  2. Foreign Aid has trapped many African states in a cycle of corruption, slower economic growth and poverty. Cutting off the flow would be far more beneficial. ~ #Maakta_Aht_Ukam

  5. This MUST become a government POLICY. We are the richest continent both in land mass and natural wealth but the cabal want to control everything and its time to kick their ass.

  6. Thats how you gain your dignity….

  7. Please Mr. President you were in ICC court as president in office, first time in history. Please, let others appear for their crimes. This dangerious move, can make Africa to be justiceless place in this world. If Africans are able to have their own ICC, why they welcome and shake hand to black Hitler(paul-kagame)???They are not even able to investigate and find the truth about this mass-murderer. Any attempt to isolate and arrest him will fail enlist Europeans they approve. So If Africans are not able to investigate and arrest the suspect, why they should get their own ICC?? Oppose Europeans I like, it is the way Africans should use but in this case, the reality is totally different. ATLANTABLACKSTAR News-paper suppose to blame UN, Europeans leaders, OAU about shaking-hand of this black -Hitler (kagame). We are wainting till Europeans tell us about the crimes of this criminal for we to believe. Sorry fo black people.

  10. Agree Mr Ololo, arms and security funding to Kenya and its proxy activities nice and steady

  11. Do tell. what is your theory on how he gained it

  12. Osei Tawiah says:

Gregg Herbert This is just how Africans are. If they hate you, they hate everything you say, good or bad.

  13. Anto Besha says:

while I agree africa needs to regain her dignity, we also need to rid ourselves of presidents who are far worse than the colonialist. Uhuru kenyatta is overseeing the most tribal, unjust and corrupt regim in the history of kenya. let him look at the mirror before pointing fingers. You and your dictator friends are the problem.

  14. Anto Besha says:

Gregg Herbert the history is well documented.. just google!

  15. Jerome Almon says:

Osei Tawiah Sounds like African Americans-Europeans and Asians use whatever works whether they like it or not if it keeps them on top. We USED to be that way.

  16. Cut all ties don't need em for nothing

  17. and so on and so forth

  18. Young King says:

All what he saying now it is what he doesnt only want.

  19. humm..those are "regime change' words!

  20. Why don't you type in a language you're comfortable with? We can then copy it and paste it on to Google Translate. Maybe then, we'd understand what you're trying to say.

  21. WOW in Keny a we export Gold,Diamond and have the best sites for tourism so you don't need foreign aid thats a big joke ! Frequenting Museveni is giving him loose tongue and soon you will change the sonstituition !

  22. Doug Odhiambo I don't want to feel big with something which is not mine. I' m not those they use to think that speaking foreign language is high level of knowledge.No,no,no. Languages are just tools of communications not knowledge. In Britain or America even those they didn't go to school they speak it fluently. So what is in my text which you can't understand?? Lot of people understand me.

  23. Steve Kiboi says:

he inheritted a large portion of his wealth. he also does business with milk, banking, insurance…my question to you is, how is he calling for africa to depend on itself a bad thing or 'something to be doubted'? or is it that you hate him for his tribe?

  24. Steve Kiboi says:

liar. kindly stop with the tribal hate disguised as concern for social ills.corruption is a problem that started way before Uhuru was president. And how is it Uhuru's family wealth related to rejecting foreign aid?

  25. Anto Besha says:

Steve Kiboi look whose talking.. am not from any major tribes fighting for supremacy. Am just a concerned citizen of one of the most corrupt goverments in the world… and that is A FACT!! you my brother is what is wrong with african societies, just because your tribal demigog is in power…you will never see anything wrong with this goverment. NYS scandal, Eurobond and now Assasination of Goverment critics are just a few of the ills of the UHURU RUTO goverment. you guys voted in a president and deputy both who were charged with crimes against humanity. if am a liar. then you guys are just mental!

  26. You have hit the nail on the head Anto, Most foreigners now classify Kenyans on tribal basis since the current regime took over. They are building on the foundation laid by the predecessor-Mwai Kibaki-who rubbished an otherwise all-inclusive MOU for narrow tribal goals. It is therefore totally unethically hypocritical for such a hell-bent tribal leader to give any advice to the African heads and by extension to Africans. Let him put his tribal house in order first before he can poke his nose into the bigger continent's issues. He was once given the mandate to bring peace to Southern Sudan but he screwed up the opportunity by going into the negotiating table with a fixed mind that made one of the parties in the conflict to seek for another mediator..How then can such a rush for fame individual give advice!!?

  27. Better described as Financial neo-colonization!!! One is a slave to his debtor!!

  28. Laughable advice yet Uhuru trot all over the globe looking for the same

  29. Which principle yet he fly around the world begging for Aid

  30. James Ololo– strong point Bro, we have to hope for some fresh blood of young leaders on the Continent who are taking note of all of this–I believe that its a possibility in the next 10 to 20years–Africa's rise to prominence is a must –Thats simply God's plan, not that of man
