7 Reasons Black Twitter Would Love to See Iggy Azalea Log Off for Good

Iggy Azalea

She Acknowledges Everything Except Her White Privilege

Iggy Azalea has been one of the most vocal celebrities on social media and has felt the need to take to Twitter to address everything that happens in her life. From criticizing memes about her to coming after Steve Madden regarding her own campaign ad, she has never been one to hold back online. What she hasn’t discussed, however, is her own white privilege and how it has allowed her to flourish in the music industry. According to fellow white rapper Macklemore, that’s one of the greatest sins any white hip-hop star can make. “You need to know your place in the culture,” he said during an interview on Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning. “Are you contributing or are you taking? Are you using it for your advantage or are you contributing?” He added that white rappers “cannot disregard where this culture came from” and insisted that white rappers “know [their] place” in this musical genre.

Insisted on Defending Her Own Racist Tweets From the Past

When Iggy Azalea’s racist tweets from the past resurfaced as she stated to gain stardom, many were waiting to see what the hip-hop star would say about the racially charged comments. Some of the tweets took aim at Hispanics, claiming they “got the box body on lock” and another joked about “5 Black men [getting] arrested out the front of popeyes” along with the hashtag “#stereotypes.” At the very least, some fans expected an apology. Instead, the Australian rapper took aim at the people who were bringing up the old comments. “Listen. I see a trend on twitter in the last week that involves ppl retweeting artists old tweets,” Iggy Azalea said in a series of tweets back in June 2013. “im talking OLD, done and dusted ass ones … but remember there was a time when my twitter was just for my friends and family to see. Just like yours probably is now. Anyhow — to me, I feel like what you guys are doing is really unfair. thats my opinion. Right now in 2013.”
