Bill Cosby Continues Aggressive Legal Tactics After Allegedly Hiring Private Investigators to Discredit Accusers

A new report has surfaced accusing Bill Cosby of hiring private investigators to discredit the women who accused the Cosby Show actor of sexual assault.

While the reports are yet to be confirmed, the move is one that has some legal experts raising a brow.

Cosby already has “at least one Glendale, Calif.-based firm with a half-dozen LAPD detectives on staff” under his belt, according to the New York Post.

The private investigators, however, would serve the sole purpose of prying into the lives of the alleged victims and finding any information that would discredit their stories or their overall “character and motives,” Page Six reported on Monday.

The problem is that many people are questioning whether or not Cosby needs to come out the gates swinging at the alleged victims.

“Sometimes in a case like this, less can be more,” said Benjamin Brafmen, a criminal defense lawyer who represented Dominique Strauss-Kahn, to the NY Times. “Attacking someone who is perceived to be a ‘victim’ can often be unproductive.”

He added that he would have recommended a more “softly spoken” approach that would deny all the claims and allegations without challenging the “integrity of the women now coming forward.”

“Simply put, it may be better to say nothing than try and engage so many,” Brafman said.

For Cosby’s camp, however, playing hardball is just the name of the game.

Cosby’s attorney, Martin Singer, has been known for his aggressive tactics and all throughout the latest scandal his aggressive nature has been on full display.

Bill Cosby rape accusers “Mr. Singer’s intensity was on full display in the first week of December after Judy Huth filed a civil suit in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging that in 1974, when she was 15, Mr. Cosby plied her with drinks and forced her to perform a sex act on him in a bedroom at the Playboy Mansion,” the NY Times reported. “In court papers, Mr. Singer said Ms. Huth’s claim was ‘meritless’ and nothing short of ‘a shakedown.’ “

Taking aim at the victims’ motives for coming forward with the stories of alleged sexual assault hasn’t been the only aggressive tactic Cosby and his team have used.

Back in November the Associated Press released a video of Cosby pressuring an AP reporter to “scuttle” his response to a question about the accusations.

He has also tried to blame and criticize the media for their reporting on the accusations but deciding not to run slanderous information about the women.

“The media has consistently refused to look into or publish information about various women whose stories are contradicted by their own conduct or statement,” Cosby said in a letter he wrote to The Daily News.

He sent similar angry letters to other media organizations including CNN.

Of course, it is important to note that no conclusive evidence has been presented against Cosby.

Legally he may not be in serious hot water just yet but when it comes to PR, the veteran comedian is in the midst of a serious nightmare.

  1. So defending yourself against unsubstantiated 20 and 30+ year old allegations with no physical or third party eyewitness evidence (in ANY of the claims) make him the bad guy? And looking into your accuser's life to determine their motives and character is wrong because they are women? I mean after all, we know women NEVER make false allegations of rape and abuse right? And women NEVER attempt to extort money by claiming assault and abuse? Right? And these women aren't now trying to get Cosby to put up $100 Million dollars to "compensate them" now, right?

  2. Bonnie Upton says:

False accusation stats run from 2 – 8% according to authorities. So, tell me. Ya gonna bet for or against those odds?
His defense will have to include why there is a photo of him with a 15 year old girl at the Playboy mansion. Oh, and he'll have to explain that annoying 2005 settlement that was made with Ms. Constand (after 12 other women – who did not know each other – came forward as Jane Does with strikingly similar stories).
These women came forward most recently because a comedian called Cosby out on his hypocrisy and it went viral.
It is obvious you don't know what you are talking about.

  3. Gordy Billet says:

Bonnie Upton False accusation…. Bonnie, did you read the 2nd line? "While the reports are yet to be confirmed, the move is one that has some legal experts raising a brow." All these stories are yet to be proven " False accusation."… Trail by Media… The only hypocrisy is the media, calling this news when they use lines like "While the reports are yet to be confirmed"…. If only one thing good can come out of this, If any one is Raped report it Now, Don't wait…

  4. Bonnie Upton The facts don't matter; it's simply a numbers game. The odds are in favor of guilt, so he must be guilty, is what you seem to be saying. Burress called out Cosby because he was envious of his success, and hated him calling out blacks on bad behavior and for his popularity with whites. Burress has no more knowledge of what happened between Cosby and those women than the man in the moon. Bill is on the wrong side of the PC divide, and we must believe the vagina, and we must believe a creepy, rapey comic like Burress, because he's siding with the vagina on this one.

  5. Bonnie Upton I'm ignoring your whole post because these women, and everyone who is riding this bandwagon, including media companies and notable public figures, are doing nothing but setting themselves up for some serious trouble. In the end you are going to see Cosby filing a plethora of slander and libel suits like the world has never seen. 2015 is going to be a very sorry year for a whole lot of people, lady. I would not want to be one of them.

  6. Typical white sharks coming in to take a bite of the pie. Throughout history this seems to be the pattern. Just another lesson to reminds us when we do get there remember where we came from and loving our race isn't classified as racism.

  7. David Miller says:

And we know that Cosby doesn't lie, have extramarital affairs, father children out of wedlock, intimidate the press and threaten to sue anyone that writes an article that he doesn't approve first. Why would we think that any of this is not true?

  8. David Miller says:

This has nothing to do with race. If you want racism to go a way stop bringing it up every chance you get.

  9. Gordy Billet says:

David Miller Yes, Women don't lie either, Nor does the Media. Yes Trial by media.

  10. Gordy Billet says:

David Miller Oh right David …. Try living with racism for a while! Maybe if you stopped claiming the only reason racism exists because 'them there people of colored folks keeps bring it up'…"If you want racism to go a way stop bringing it up every chance you get." Yes just keep your eyes closed and it will all go away…lol

  11. Don't forget the concerted effort by blacks like Burress to Cosby anyone who dares call out other blacks for bad behavior. Chris Rock is backpedaling like crazy now, because he's a coward who won't stand up for what he believes in. Just ask Charles Barkley how tough it is to have an unpopular opinion, but at least he hasn't back down.

  12. My dear miller wake up and smell the coffee. Do some history, especially on the interactions between blacks and whites and get back to me. Until then please keep quiet because all you're letting show is your fear, fear of karma. All of you who refuse to acknowledge wrong doings. Sooner or later you all will have to talk about it you can't share the same space forever without doing so. I history teaches anything is that to opt for the contrary is to invite anarchy.
