There are people paying thousands of dollars to get lips like Washington’s, but the Scandal star recently revealed that she never wore red lipstick because she wasn’t confident about her full lips.

“It took me forever to allow my makeup artist to do bright red lips,” she said. “Sometimes it takes someone saying to you, ‘Do you know how beautiful your lips are? You should try wearing red lipstick.’ ”

She added that now she embraces her beauty and says everyone should “celebrate” their “unique gifts and then have confidence around them.”

Believe it or not, the stunning Being Mary Jane star used to battle with serious insecurities. On her own blog, she opened up about the struggles to fit the “perfect” standard.

“So, I was going through MAJOR low self esteem,” she wrote. “I was a black girl in an all white school in an all white community, never feeling good enough, but always being encouraged by my parents to be bigger, badder and better.”

After getting “dumped for a light skin girl,” she said she also faced insecurities about her nose, lips and hair, and this was all at the age of 15.
