Lupita Nyong’o
Today, the Oscar-winning actress has been praised for her beautiful skin and was even featured on Sesame Street to talk to Elmo about why she loved her “beautiful, brown” skin. She wasn’t always embracing her complexion, however.
“I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful,” she said. “I put on the TV and saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned.”
Tamar Braxton
The Braxton sister is known for bragging about her “coint, honey” and being “beat” and “snatched,” but when it comes down to it, she says these things in hopes that she will make herself believe it. Her battle with vitiligo has taken a serious toll on her confidence despite the fact that she’s a stunning, talented songstress.
“It’s so hard for me to talk about my insecurities so I always talk about ‘Oh I’m beat, I’m done.’ And, you know, I talk about myself and I say it out loud so I can start to believe it. And I just carry that with me only because I have a skin disease called vitiligo and it’s so crazy that nobody believes it.”
