This is an amazing adaptation of the also amazing satirical essay by Binyavanga Wainaina. Comparing the two, I can see why the filmmaker cut out some material, and appreciate what’s been added with the use of editing, cinematography, sound, staging, and performance by Djimon Hounsou. To me, the meaning of the little white girl is vague, perhaps representing the young (white, privileged, western) aspiring writers / public whom Hounsou is “instructing.” Personally, I think it might be an even more effective and creative statement if this film were set not in some hotel room but in a classroom, museum, or similar space more accommodating of the didacticism of the text and diversity of the public, maybe with shots of different people reacting in ways that reflect their own sensibilities shaped by race / class / politics / geography / history—affirming what he’s saying, rejecting it, looking puzzled, laughing, etc.
We as descendants of AFRIKAN must at first get our act together here in this country, because what good would we be in the MOTHER LAND. If we haven't taught ourselves how to be a helping hand to our Sistahs and Brotahs in AFRIKA?
