After Tupac made his posthumous appearance at Coachella in 2012, there were plenty of guesses about how celebrities would continue to use the technology, and on Thursday night M.I.A. and Janelle Monáe gave us another glimpse of the future.
M.I.A. was headlining a New York show in support of her album Matangi, while Monáe was performing in Los Angeles at the same time. But a few thousand miles didn’t keep them from making cameos at each other’s shows.
Thanks to the use of holograms, Monáe joined M.I.A on stage in NYC to deliver a verse on the single “Bad Girls,” while M.I.A returned the favor by joining Monáe to rap along with “Q.U.E.E.N.”
According to the A.V. Club, it sounds like both artists plan to have a little more fun with this technology. “It’s definitely cool for us and it’s cool for me. I could be in 10 places at once,” M.I.A. said, while Monáe added, “I would do some experimenting with different versions of myself, playing different instruments.”
M.I.A. does believe in the concept of “Y.A.L.A.,” after all, so this makes perfect sense for her.
A fan managed to capture video footage of the holograms, which was sponsored by Audi. Check it out above.
