Anita Baker is a Grammy-award winning artist, an R&B icon and now she’s also a wanted woman in Detroit.
An arrest warrant was issued for the “Sweet Love” songstress after she allegedly failed to show up to court for a hearing over a current legal battle against a home decorating company.
Court records show that the bench warrant was issued yesterday and apparently that’s when Baker heard the news as well.
The 56-year-old singer took to her Twitter account to let her followers know that she was taking legal action.
“WHATTT??!!…sittin’ in the kitchen watching this on TV. BIG time crazy. Atty on his way to TV Station. Devil sho is busy,” she tweeted around 7 pm on March 20.
The tweet has since earned over 200 retweets from concerned fans who are flooding Baker’s mentions with questions about what is going on.
Some fans just wanted details on the legal battle, while others expressed their fear that the R&B star might face serious time in jail.
Fortunately for those fans, and Baker as well, no one is interested in putting her behind bars as long as she hands over the money that her home decorators believe they are owed.
The lawsuit was filed in 2012 when Ray Smith Painting and Decorating accused Baker of not paying them after they did an extensive work in her Detroit home.
According to the company’s legal team, Baker owes them over $15,000 and they want it soon.
“We’re not trying to give her any hard time or anything unnecessary,” said Daniel Gerow, Ray Smith Painting and Decorating’s attorney. “He’s owed the money and that could end it all right then.”
He also told the Detroit Free Press that Baker was already ordered to pay the decorating company $15,351.41 in 2011 in a default judgment for carpentry, plastering and painting work.
Baker’s attorney has not said much publicly about the situation nor has anyone from Baker’s legal team publicly denied that she owes the company money.
Only time will tell how this legal battle will play out.
Meanwhile, Baker released a single “Lately” last year, which is expected to be a part of a new upcoming album that hasn’t been given an official release date.
