Vanessa Williams Dismisses Issue of Colorism in Hollywood

Singer-actress Vanessa Williams stars alongside the legendary Cicely Tyson in the Lifetime original movie “Trip to Bountiful”.

Williams and Tyson reprise the roles they played in last year’s Broadway revival of the show, which earned Tyson a Tony Award.

In an interview with theGrio’s Chris Witherspoon, Williams discussed Lupita Nyong’o’s groundbreaking Oscar win, and weighed in on the issue of colorism in Hollywood.

“Getting a good role is hard no matter what you look like, and Lupita did a phenomenal job,” the ‘Soul Food’ actress said. “[12 Years a Slave] was the first thing she did out of her tutelage and she’s a brilliant actress… she’s amazing because she embodied that role and made you feel.”

“It’s hard to get good roles anyway, no matter how fair your skin is…no matter how brown your skin is. It’s up to you to make the best out of each opportunity that you’re given.”

  1. it appears that veteran Negroid actresses and actors get very scarce roles in America's Hollywood playing in roles few, far and in-between or appear in commercials while veteran white actresses and actors get moved over to TV shows like "CSI, NCIS, MINI-SERIES". #DONTBEHUMANCATTLE

  2. I have had enough of Lupita! She is a sellout. She'll get a few more movies but her light won't shine forever. I just wonder what next degrading role will she portray? She'll be just another unemployable black when the fanfare dies down.

Please do not down grade her winning, a win is a win no matter what

politics and hollywood have a sick, symbiotic relationship that has no place in a true democracy. I did not pay to see the shame. I did not wish to subject my body, mind and soul to the horrific depictions of slavery. it is like selling the rope to a person to hang himself. it was nice to see a beautiful dark skinned woman in all her full royalness. it was good for the young dark skinned girls to see her. forturnately, I am not in rapture over the beauty of the other races. I have seen the beauty in the women of our own race and I know there is no comparison. I do not watch their movie award shows or their music award shows. I watch my own award shows for my people.
