7 Little Known Benefits of Having Melanin Rich Skin

brain scan

Essential to Brain, Nerve, and Organ Function

In humans, melanin is the primary determinant of skin and hair color. However, few people know that melanin is found in almost every organ of the body and is necessary for the brain and nerves to operate, the eyes to see, and the cells to reproduce.

It is also found in the stria vascularis of the inner ear. In the brain, tissues with melanin include the medulla and pigment-bearing neurons within areas of the brainstem, such as the locus coeruleus and the substantia nigra. It also occurs in the zona reticularis of the adrenal gland.

Targets Free Radicals/Destroys Free Radicals

Free radicals have been implicated as the cause of widespread damage to human cells. In an article written for The Sun and Your Skin website, Diana Clarke, the website’s founder, writes about melanin’s role in scavenging free radicals, preventing the skin damage they can cause.

  1. No where in this article was sunscreen mentioned. Darker skinned people can and do get skin cancers. Many times they go undiagnosed for longer periods because the doctor doesn't think to check for it and neither do we. Yes, brown and black skin does protect against sun damage, but don't be naïve, we are still susceptible.

  2. Christopher Dear says:

If anyone needs that lesson, the sun will be more than happy to teach them. But thanks for adding on, because it's true.

  3. 2 Billion of us on the planet

  4. Glester Thorpe says:

Do some studying on skin cancer on the continent of Africa. One of the places where the sun is the hottest on the earth. You will change your perspective. Skin cancer in black people in Africa is very limited. Explain that according to your theory?

  5. Glester Thorpe "skin cancer…in Africa is very limited" Limited is the operating word. It is not unheard of for Blacks (or brown skinned people) to develop skin cancers. I stand by my FACT (not theory) because too many Black Americans take for granted that they don't have to "bother" with wearing sun hats or sunscreen and harbor a false sense of security that we are 100% immune to melanomas, which simply is not the case. Furthermore, other skin issues can arise in dark skinned people from over exposure to the sun, including moles, wrinkling, and dry skin.

  6. Alexander Sinclair says:

Colette ByFilms Byfield One of the main reasons that I heard for the rise in skin cancer in blacks especially in America is basically evolution, in that many blacks are mixed. Also the skin is no longer used to the sun. It is a plausible theory.

  7. Shinobi Mujer D'Acero says:

Well it didn't mention anything about it because it doesn't say you are completely immune just because you have darker skin.

  8. Alahyo Amira says:

Right Shinobi! Bc the article is about the BENEFITS of melanin, which means it's going to cover exactly what the title says. Go find the article titled "Little Known Misconceptions of Melanin", otherwise you're only veering off topic. That's a good point somewhere else but not here.

  9. Alahyo Amira Numerous black people (especially black women) will probably read this article and say "See, I don't need any sunscreen!" It is not "off topic" to note that anyone who spends time in the sun needs to take some simple precautions irrespective of their beneficial melanin. Excluding useful information doesn't helping anyone nor does it strengthen the main point of the article.

  10. David Opoku says:

Colette, your information is well received, however my thoughts are:

1 – If you are going to present us with meaningful information it would be interesting to provide numerical figures to your facts. To help put into persecutive the degree to which UV rays affect blacks? and if so what level of melanin constitutes higher incidence of skin cancer

I have often heard that blacks can get skin cancers however no figures are presented although this could be because blacks have not carried out our own studies (i deliberately presume others will not do it for us)

  11. great point Glester Thorp, another misconception about people of color from Africa and America is the rate of people with diabetes.

  12. @David Opuka, THAT is the crux of the problem! Because it is "assumed" that darker people are naturally resistant to skin cancers, the statistics are ambiguous. This puts Blacks at HIGHER risks because of the "unknown" numbers. How can I present numerical data if the experts who in these fields don't bother studying it? Due to decades of medical racism, "black illnesses" went undiagnosed. This is why I am still upset by the misleading title of this article. It somewhat feeds the assumption that Blacks are some kind of superrace, immune to any genetic or environmental issues. Is this the case? Black men die at far higher rates of prostate cancer (a very treatable cancer in its early stages) because the medical community ignores or downplays patient concerns. I know this is hurting Black pride right now, but again I will reiterate, WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN!

  13. http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/skin/statistics/race.htm
This is a CDC Skin Cancer report from 2013. The stats list black women as having the lowest incidence of skin cancer and Hispanic women as having the 2nd highest occurrence (after white women). This confuses me because I see plenty of darker skinned Hispanics. This is why I don't trust the medical data. Did they only study fair skinned Hispanics? Did they only study the darkest Black women? What about women with medium, lighter skin tones who are Black? At this point, I will put my money where my mouth is and reach out to my local hospital and find out what the heck this means. Thanks for the discussion all!

  14. Paul Durbin says:

I was in St Thomas in 1961 and got the worst sunburn. Yes, my skin peeled and it HURT. Yes, I'm very DARK skin!!!

  15. Yes, Blacks can get it, but that is largely dependent upon what you eat and your lifestyle. Your melanocytes are probably functioning wrong because of your lifestyle. We definitely react to the sun differently than Caucasoid. They are "naturally" against the sun, while some blacks may be affected negatively by the sun because of the poisonous things they intake daily.

  16. Tyree Khalfani RIGHT ON POINT..BLACKS WHO SUFFER FROM CANCER EXPOSE THEMSELVES TO CANCEROUS FOODS,HABITS…NOT THE SUN….CANCER IS A BUILD UP OF MUCOUS….

  17. Colette ByFilms Byfield I am going to way in a little bit. There is so much information on melanin, no black person should be ill informed on what it is. Melanin protects black people's skin 99.9 percent, from the sun's UVR, it also protects us from nuclear energy. Check out the nuclear fallout in Japan a couple years, everything around the area died, after some time they notice white mushrooms started to grow grow in the area, come to find out the only thing in them, melanin. That is why laser does not work on black skin. Having said that, melanin practically protects us from harmful every day elements around us. The reason it does not protect us as much as it once did internally, because we do not have our pure genes anymore because on interbreeding. That is one of the reason I advise against interbreeding, it destroys our pure superior genes, pure African genes are the most superior. Whites pineal gland does not work, scientist are working on maybe they they have finished, perfecting it, to give whites color, by gene engineering, and repair their pineal gland, a Godly gland. I also need to add we have our own natural sun screen, sun screen on the shelves has synthetic melanin, we have it naturally therefore we don't really need it, as the sun shine on us, the hotter it gets the more melanin is kicked out, that is why most of us who stay in the sun a lot, only gets darker, the darker you become the more melanin is rubbed on you naturally, protecting us from the sun. Most RXs contain melanin. It is a natural wonder drug.

  18. Collette, I have never gotten the stats, but do you know what is the percentage of blacks who get skin cancer?

  19. Henry Polk says:

The numbers tell the story, it's ambiguous because white people want it that way, the fact is black people get skin cancer very rarely; especially compared to whites or people of lesser pigment… I did a study of my own on the subject, I asked 10 white people if they knew anyone with skin cancer 7 said yes, while 10 blacks said they knew no one with skin cancer….

  20. Henry Polk says:

  21. Melanin Rich says:

Colette ByFilms Byfield Just Because You're Paranoid, Doesn't Mean They're Not Out to Get You

  22. Thomas Tobin Jr. says:

Colette ByFilms Byfield I will absolutely not wear carcinogen containing sunscreen. If I happen to develop skin cancer, I have no worries. Skin cancer is quickly and easily treated with high potency cannabis oil known as RSO. Do the research on this substance before having an opinion. I've been plugged into forums for several years now on the topic, as well as doing extensive research. The medical response is not that it has been disproven, but that the evidence is "anecdotal". Yet, the amount of "anecdotal" evidence is overwhelming, and far more than most studies would be able to accomplish. These are real people. Look for them. The movie "Run From The Cure" is a good start if you are unfamiliar with the medicinal value of Cannabis. And no, I'm not talking about smoking it!

  23. Our black Godly skin also repeal nuclear energy rays, that is why laser don't work on us very well, such as hair removal, removing spots on our skin, and other reasons it doesn't work.

  24. Are you a scientist?

  25. Charlie Willock To make a statement, that is silly.

  26. Nzingha Shabaka How so? Henry should be on the short list for next year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine!

  27. Henry Polk says:

Fact is, anyone can do a scientific study as long as its properly done… Asking 10 people or more does constitute a legitimate study… If you know black people ask 20 of them if they know any other blacks personally who has skin cancer, and then ask 20 whites, the number for whites is always grossly higher…

  28. Henry Polk says:

Of course it gets more accurate with more details, and a greater knowledge of what's being told to you, which is why you probably shouldn't tell why you're asking..

  29. King Jay Mansa Musa says:

They are not going to say also that Scientist recognized Melanin People are the ONLY Real Human Beings on Earth and we are able to travel abroad to other planets without harm…..also Sub-Humans where considers to be Non-Melanized People: Research and you will so much Knowledge as to why the Non-Melanin people want to KILL all the Melanin People…..

  30. Alexandra Etane Ewane says:

Bullshit!!! Why don't you guys go to other planets then? If one has to believe something, one has to back it up at least so they wouldn't sound so foolish.

  31. One question?do black peope HAVE to use sunlotion before going outside no but whites do why because tey dont have melanin shall i say dark skin

  32. Lol when they call u a nigger call them vampire cause they want be able to walk in the sun in the future thanks to global warming

  33. Are you ready for a quantum shift in awareness, perception and power? Melanin, the aromatic biopolymer and organic semiconductor is worth $300 a gram more than gold.

    https://keyamsha.wordpress.com/2014/06/28/melanin-is-worth-353-a-gram/

  34. We are in the midst of a 5 year skin cancer epidemic. The numbers do not lie. The issue is not in Africa. It is in Europe and the USA. The USA's state with the highest rate of skin cancer is MONTANA. How many Black people are in Montana?

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21540015

  35. Last Summer, while the media was bombarding everyone with news of Ebola, the Surgeon General of the USA issued the first ever "Call to Action" on skin cancer.

  37. Thomas Tobin Jr. says:

I guess their sub-human language is too difficult for you to grasp.

  38. Alexandra Etane Ewane says:

It doesn't matter. Black is still minority and not well educated. Maybe "melanin" makes people stupid and gansgters. SMH.

  39. Nzingha Shabaka says:

Charlie Willock It is called reading. To acquire information the scientist put out there for us to read. Then what you read it becomes knowledge. Try it sometimes.

  40. Nzingha Shabaka He didn't get that "information" from scientists; he simply asked 20 people a stupid question.

  41. Lucky for me I just get blacker in the sun

  42. I find it funny how dark skin is so devalued in this world, when NOT having melanin is like missing one of the human bodies important features. People of color, having been this first people on this planet, have all the original human genetic features. So, it should be the fair skinned people that are the strange ones. And I'm not racist or something stupid like that, I am only telling the truth.

  43. Alexandra Etane Ewane all the proof needed to already known and present. what more proof do you need? check your history. check your present behavior.

  44. back off some of that privilege, let's even the playing field and then lets talk.

  45. yes, but we need to use sun block, too. they busted the ozone layer, remember?

  46. the numbers are our strength but we don't know it.

  47. Look at the CDC rates of skin cancer melanoma for 2014. Blacks almost non existent. Then look at the others from whites Asians Hispanic sky high rates and climbing every year. Nothing misleading about this article. More empowering. And if you are black and have to ask what's empowering about the article? We the EU melanated people are one with nature. No such thing as a curse for having black or dark skin. In fact I call it a gift. Sun kissed!!! Ase to all the ancestors.

  48. Alexandra Etane Ewane you need to read up on who the Kushite Ethiopians and Kemetic Egyptians really are. ( The Wonderful Ethiopians of the Ancient Cushite Empire ) Melanin=Carbon(C) and also Water(H20) are inter-connected and also actually foundational and fundamental elements of the Universe and beyond.

  49. Jay Shaheed says:

Melanin people created all languages dumb ass ….first off I only communicate with intelligent people if you know no knowledge i history keep it moving… Cause you must school yourself before u quiz the teacher fool….

  50. Dal-Ham W Payton Lol no thank you. You guys keep on listing ridiculous stuff that make you feel good about yourselves. It's not going to change black people's tendency to self-destruction, which I believe is the greatest issue here. Why don't you guys use all those "super powers" in real life instead of just talking about it like you guys are high or something.
Plus I hate it when people like you only see black people as Egyptians or Ethiopians. I grew up in Africa, and my tribe doesn't have anything to do with Egypt or Ethiopia, so I find that ignorant and kind of insulting.

  52. Melanin or too much of is higher risk for frost bite. Also, your body does not obsorbe enough vitamin d if in cloudy areas. You see light skin is just a small adaptation to survive in cold regions. As far as sub-human and all that. There were many branches of species of humanoid and a lot of inter breeding. Modern man is a term used to dis robe the promenant spiecies around today. All in all we are all one with all the rest of life on this planet. Fact we humans black and white are 50% genetically identical to a banana, so you think some pigment is going to make us different races. What we are is a product of our environments built to survive and evolve.. ONE LOVE .. Perspective.. Don't draw lines…

  53. White is the minority. The birth rates among whites in the u.s. is stagnant. So bad they were bringing in Europeans to supplement their numbers. It also flat in Europe. More whites die then are being born. What makes you think black is a minority. Blacks in America. South America. The Pacific. And Africa. Like it or not. White skin blonde hair blue, green, hazel eye's are all recessive traits due to lack of EU melanin. Research that and weep. How's that for uneducated. Lol.

  54. Alan Carter says:

Farntella Graham see what he did with his privilege; cashier at Walmart.

  55. Alexandra Etane Ewane………….Shut up Clown.

  56. Honestly Fam, I SOMEWHAT AGREE with Alexander Ethan Ewane. he said and I quote,

" Why don't you guys use all those "super powers" in real life instead of just talking about it like you guys are high or something.'

If you really look at what he said it kinda makes sense so let's do EXACTLY WHAT HE SAID, Lol. We're the majority in some area's and since the majority rules then LET'S UNITE & RULE 🙂

Not saying that we're not already doing great things on this planet but let's step it up a bit and really show & prove who's the dominate species on this planet. Like any loosing sports team, let's regroup, reorganize, rethink our plan/strategy and let's properly prepare this next Gen to do great things, Peace Fam!

  58. Alevxandra Etane Ewane You look pretty brown to me, and so, you are making your self what you said about the other blacks. Riiight…..

  59. Ajak Mabut says:

You don't know what you are talking about.

  60. Mandy Reed says:

I used to think lighter skin and other physical traits came from adaptation in different climates too. However, this is incorrect. There is no scientific proof to back that theory. There is scientific proof though that anyone who is not a pure African has Neanderthal or Denisovan DNA. That is where those physical and biological changes originated. Such as Europeans having fertility problems, that was passed from Neanderthal breeding. This is because Neanderthals were not humans. They were distant cousins, but not the same species at all. Do some research on this, it's fascinating stuff. Also, the people with "white" skin were the last to appear on Earth. Oh, and please don't take any of this as biased. I am only 31-33% African. I looked at my family tree and took a DNA test. Peace.

  61. Mandy Reed says:

There are many uses for melanin, other than skin color. If you don't have enough in your brain, you will become mentally disabled. The pineal gland is also full of melanin. There is a reason melanin is selling for $365/gram. This is an uplifting thing because all of this knowledge has been kept from African or "Black" people for a long time. There is still a lot more to be revealed, but realize there is a very good reason the Vatican has a space program. Hint: They're not looking for jesus.

  62. Alan Carter At least "he" is not an old wanker with a creepy smile who works at pennsylvania. And I guess the fact that you seemingly cannot read my name and understand that "he" is in fact "she" proves what I said. OLD SLAVE-DESCENDANT ILLITERATE WANKER. I was born and raised in Africa, so don't reduce me to your sorry ass slave level.

  63. Darts Brooklyn It's funny…you are the one whose facebook profile picture is a guy posing as if he was about to take a shit in the wild. And you dare call me "clown"?

  64. Nzingha Shabaka I am black. But I don't buy this "melanin superiority" crap. If you keep on saying something without being able to back it up then you make yourself look stupid. And that's exactly what black people keep on doing and then later on blame others for their misfortunes.

  65. Mandy Reed Lol. You have to drop that crack before it kills you.

  66. Farntella Graham Keep on dreaming. It's very entertaining.

  67. Jay Shaheed Nonsense. Smart people don't call people they do not know "fool". The fact that you feel big by thinking you created stuff doesn't mean that it's actually the case. But I always enjoy watching creepy pedophile-looking assholes like you make themselves look pathetic. Keep it up mate.

  68. Lol "Alexander Ethan Ewane"? "He"? Did I spell my name wrong, or is it that you guys are illiterate in here?

  69. Sahbi Said says:

Actually, the African American birth rates are worse. Thanks to IR dating, abortion, and black women choosing to not have children in life. The black population has not grown in the U.S in years! To cover up this fact African Americans are now jumping on the everybody is black bandwagon. They associate Obama, a biracial President with black. Which is not true. People like Obama have their own racial category. If black people love their melanin so much, why are they so afraid of passing it down to a new generation; or why do they water it down more than any other ethnic group?

  70. Black Power! Whites are more educated to know that the black skin is superior that's why they use force and intimidation. If we are to check from the evolutionary aspect of things we'll realise that the white skin is a by product of the BLACK. Meaning that BLACK is the raw material and white is just chaff

  71. BLACK is the Origin of humanity. White race evolved from BLACK.

  72. Sahbi Said because skin color doesn't matter.

  73. Leon D White says:

    Tell them again bro!

  74. Today, Humans are neither superior or inferior to each other but incomparable, both black and white – melanin does not make us any superior to those deficient of it

  75. Adam Lee says:

You sound pretty racist. There isn't any evidence to show race even exist. It's a social construct.

  76. Chris Kent says:

Yup, BLACK is the Origin of humanity. The modern BLACK race also evolved from BLACK.

  77. Alex, I am keeping it moving, leaving your low intelligence, racist, half animal violent a $$ behind. Genetic annihilation is the desired goal

  78. People of African descent are minorities by popular polls, not DNA. Many were taught to hate themselves, and many do what they can to claim to be something else because of self-hatred. The census is an opinion of yourself, not science. You were never a minority.

  79. Clearly, having dark hued skin has benefits. Nature's designs were meant for a purpose.

  80. Agree. But there is no such thing as black and white. It's fictional and a creation by European elites.

  81. But there is no such thing as black and white. It's fictional and a creation by European elites.

  84. stfu captain coon go back to africa with your self-hate

  86. Alexandra Ewane skin cancer is not common among blacks anywhere

  90. David Kinch says:

MandyDoll Doll That 31-33% Beats strong within you. Big Up Goddess.

  91. David Kinch says:

You're a minority, not educated stupid and a gangster too? You're more Black than anyone else on here, clearly these are your observations Of yourself above all others.

  92. Jamie Myrick says:

Why do everyone miss the point about these studies. It's never a matter of superior or inferior. Every creature on earth is unique and as different as a snowflake, stop making judgement. The point here is that there are things to learn about melanin that may benefit us in some way in the future. RIGHT now I think one of things African American women could let go is the thought that their skin pigment is a symbol of ignorance, and something to cover and hide before they can be viewed as beautiful. There's something beautiful about turning 80 and looking 60 as long as I watch my diet. I saw it in my mother and mother in law and now as I approach 60, it feels pretty good growing old in the numerical sense but still feeling and looking youthful. I'm thanking God for the melanin metebolic process. 🙂

  93. Tani Moy says:

No such thing as too much melanine but there is too little. More chance of frost bite because we don't aren't native to the cold just like melanine defficient skin (caucasians) will suffer and burn, high risk of skin cancer etc when they are in the sun. Also we absorb the sun and fet sufficient vitamin D in our own climate, so there's MUCH more benegits to being melanine rich as oppose to being melanine defficient.

  94. Tani Moy says:

Vince Cushite There is, the sun says so

  95. Nikki Lyn says:

all black people want to cry about racism but yet all I see on topics like this is racist black people! its getting to the point where white people cant even say they are proud to be white cause that is racist! what more do black people want? basically all the music industry is black today you have your own channel BET! what if they came up with a white channel called WET? oh but that would not be aloud cause that would be racist! Get the fuck over it and get off your high horse no one is better than anyone else it makes me sick how a race can cry racism so much but go do the very thing that they are crying about to another race! FYI the white people born today had nothing to do with slavery in case you didn't notice and its getting to the point where black people can totally make fun of the white race in anyway they want and say what ever they want about them because they went through slavery but white people got to watch what they say cause it might look racist! I don't know but from what I understand black people were not the only slaves in history. It makes me sick that people are just too stupid to see the big picture that we are all the human race! black people go ahead still worship your white Jesus HAHA LOL!!!

  96. Nikki Lyn says:

no its a white only place!!! WTF? RACIST!

  97. Wake up sister, you've been programmed to hate your own people. You are the chosen people of Jah, the true israelite. Wake up sister Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

  98. Alexandra Ewane Well to say superior or inferior may be extreme for some people. But if what we call "white" people are not adapted to the Sun, meaning they usually can not tan but burn, turning red etc are they suppose to live in the darkness?

  99. Farntella Graham DON"T PUT ON NO DAMN SUN LOTION OR ANYTHING YOU CANNOT EAT ON YOUR SKIN IT IS A ORGAN AND EATS IT ANYWAY. AND IT IS PROVEN SKIN MUTATION/DISEASE/FREE RADICALS ETC COME FROM THE LOTION BEING ABSORBED INTO YOUR SKIN IN THE SUN.

  100. LOL! Using Caps Means My Opinions Must Be Fact. Just curious, in your reality, if I am not a "Real Human Being Native To Earth" and I also "can not travel to other planets without harm, how exactly did I end up here? That kinda doesn't make sense Oh Wait I must not be who you are talking about anyway. After all I don't want to kill Melanin people. I don't want to kill short people, or old people, or male people, or left handed people, or straight haired people. I don't even want to kill crazy troll people! Diversity Rocks! (My opinion stated as fact!)

  101. MandyDoll Doll Actually both are still hotly contested theories. Regardless, picking a certain time where people are suddenly human and not apes, is about the same as deciding if someone is "black enough" to be black or "white enough" to be white. Do we go by melanin? If so albinos aren't black even if 100% african heritage. Do we go by DNA percentages? Then you are white. Black and white definitions came to us by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, as he tried to define varitaions in humanity by 5 human "races". Seldom brought up in the Black/White debate is yellow, red and brown. (asians, native americans, and hispanics). Talk about a prejudice theory that in spite of being proven utterly false that refuses to die. There is actually only the one human race. Human races is a social/prejudicial construct. Actually maybe a better way of judging "races" in humans would be blood type. After all, of all the traits handed down by our ancestors, blood type theoretically has alot more to say about our evolutionary adaptations, than skin tone. O types being the oldest were supposedly hunters, A came about in the food shift to farming, and B to raising animals for food.

  102. Actually The origen of humanity is currently theorized to be East Africa, although there are some that argue in the americas and others still that say somewhere in asia, or even on some pacific island somewhere. And The absolute color of the "original human" is also assumed (STILL just a theory) to be a brownish color. From there humanity continued to diversify into many hues, golden, reddish, paler, and yes, even "blacker". This whole black/white thing utterly ignores native americans, indians, asians, and many other ethnic groups. It tries to shove a multitude of ethnic groups into two highly inaccurate extremes "white" and "black" and then decide which one is "right" and which one is "wrong". This black/white prejudice thing is in our heads. We might as well define people by their eye color. That makes the same amount of sense.

  103. fast twitch muscle response is another benefit to being a melanin rich person (look up the term if you don't know what it is)…as well as being a "cushion" against damage from birth defects and genetically derived mental illnesses.

  104. Tae Marks says:

Alexandra Ewane If you dislike the article and black people on this forum so much why do you keep commenting? You're a very strange person with a hint of inferioty complex……….se perdre!

This is why I will only have children with black women. Blacks are the most superior among our species which is why we are attacked so much. Stand up

  106. Colette Byfield so then write your own article on the "misconceptions of melanin" is you're so concerned. I, as a black woman am too, but you aren't doing anything for the community by complaining on someone else's article about what they didn't bring into the topic of discussion. Sit down and write something.

  107. David Freed says:

This is the most ridiculous nonsense I've ever heard, sort of black racism meets the x-files.Thank goodness most black people don't buy this total nonsense. Melanin is one of many thousands of compounds found in living creatures — from microbes to blue whales — and it doesn't convey any spiritual or superior powers on any of us. But if Jay wants to play, 'fly me to the moon, let me play among the stars' in his spare time, more power to him.
