Pop star Shakira is back with some new music after taking a small break from recording to have a baby ad pursue other ventures like The Voice. The Columbian singer teamed up with Rihanna for a new single called “Can’t Remember To Forget You,” which sounds like a record from earlier in Shakira’s career.

As reported by billboard.com:

“Shakira and Rihanna’s long-anticipated duet has at last arrived: “Can’t Remember To Forget You,” the enjoyably grandiose lead single from Shakira’s forthcoming studio album, premiered Monday on Ryan Seacrest’s syndicated radio show.

“After beginning with a decidedly ska-punk guitar riff, “Can’t Remember To Forget You” kicks into second gear during the first chorus, in which Shakira asserts over a chunky rock arrangement, ‘I keep forgetting I should let you go.’ Rihanna then arrives to share in the heartbreak during the second verse, falling in line with Shakira’s breathy syllables while the duel vocal dynamism successfully amps up the drama.”

Shakira’s upcoming album will be her first English-language work since 2009 when she did She Wolf. And if this first single is an indication of what is to come, her fans will be delighted that she is returning to her original style.

According to the theguardian.com:

“[After doing some EDM-style records],thankfully, she seems to have reverted back to the undervalued, guitar-tinged, new wave pop of her last English-language album, She Wolf.”

Shakira also talked to Seacrest about her relationship with Rihanna, and how “Can’t Remember To Forget You” embodies their Caribbean roots.

“You know, we’re both from the Caribbean so I always thought we had that common ground, but this song is pretty reggae,” noting it has a rock sound that she feels Rihanna also embodied. “I honestly thought it would never happen… She heard the record and she loved it and she said she was onboard and I was the happiest girl alive,” she said. “To shoot the video with her has been a blast.”

There is still no official date on when Shakira’s new album will debut, but it is expected to be sometime in the first quarter of the year.
