Fullback John Conner has signed a two-year deal with the New York Giants, according to sources.
Conner was cut by the Cincinnati Bengals when he lost the fullback job to Orson Charles this past preseason. As the cameras rolled in the show “Hard Knocks,” which featured the Bengals’ summer camp, Conner looked shocked that he lost the competition to Charles. The fullback who played for the Jets in the 2010-2011 season, also didn’t stick around long-term with the New York organization.
Despite letting Conner go, head coaches Marvin Lewis and Rex Ryan still think he’s a good player.
“This is a hard one. I know you’ve put your heart and soul into this,” Lewis told Conner on Hard Knocks, as he cut him. “You didn’t do anything wrong. You have done everything. It’s more just maybe the versatility of Orson, not necessarily what you didn’t do. Orson’s contribution on special teams may be more.”
Conner now has another chance. After Giants’ fullback Henry Hynoski suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, the team found in Conner what they need in a player to fill that position.
