New York Jets’ QB Competition: Mark Sanchez to Start Over Geno Smith…Again

Yesterday, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan came down hard on his rookie quarterback, Geno Smith, for having a ‘brutal’ practice. As a result of the player’s horrible practice, Ryan decided to name QB Mark Sanchez as the starter Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

On Wednesday, after the rookie threw three interceptions (plus another in 7-on-7 drills), Ryan expressed his concerns to the media.

“It was brutal,” Ryan said. “That was Geno’s worst day, obviously. The ankle is part of it. That’s way too many picks. He didn’t look comfortable today. It was a bad day. … We’ve seen guys have bad days, but this was a really bad day.”

The team announced the starter via their Twitter account.

“QB decision made for this weekend: Mark Sanchez will start vs. Jacksonville,” the tweet read.

Smith suffered a mild ankle sprain in the opener, leading Ryan to say that Smith is “not close to 100 percent” and may not play at all against the Jaguars.
