‘Captain Phillips’ Starring Tom Hanks to Open New York Film Festival

The Film Society of Lincoln Center just announced Paul Greengrass’ “Captain Phillips” as the opening-night selection at this year’s New York Film Festival.

Tom Hanks stars as Captain Richard Phillips, in a story of the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama – the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years.

Considered one of the most anticipated releases of the year, “Captain Phillips” is also expected to be a major award contender. Sony will Officially release the film in theaters October 11th.

This year’s New York Film Festival will open on September 27th and run through October 13th.
