The 2013 edition of the BET Awards kicked off without a hitch last night from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Chris Tucker served as host of the gala event where singers Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake, actor Jamie Foxx, and teenage Olympian Gabrielle Douglas were crowned with top awards.
Rihanna was honored with the prize for Best Female R&B Pop Artist, which comes as no surprise, being that she’s the biggest thing next to Beyonce. However, Miguel topping fellow nominees Usher, Chris Brown, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake for Best Male R&B Pop Artist was as shocking as his infamous drop kick.
Drake started on the top of competition with 12 nominations, and remained there after nabbing three trophies, including one for Video of the Year for “Started from the Bottom.” Kendrick Lamar shared not only an award with Drake (A$AP Rocky’s “(Expletive) Problems” won Best Collaboration), he also tied the hit-maker for having the most awards of the night.
Foxx and his “Django Unchained” co-star Kerry Washington were named Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. Nicki Minaj came up big with her fourth consecutive year winning the best female hip-hop artist and the fandemonium award. Seventeen-year-old Olympic gold medalist Douglas, also came up big, taking home both the Young Stars award and the Sportswoman of the Year honor.
