Jennifer Hudson took center stage with an incredible rendition of “Silent Night” in the first trailer for the upcoming musical adaptation of “Black Nativity.”
Based off the play written by poet/playwright Langston Hughes, “Black Nativity” follows a struggling single mother from Baltimore (Hudson) and her streetwise son Langston (Jacob Latimore). After being evicted from her home, she is forced to send her son Langston to his estranged grandparents’ home in New York City for the holidays.
Aside from Hudson, the film is supported by a strong African American cast that includes Angela Basset and Forest Whitaker, who play the grandparents. Mary J. Blige plays a guardian angel while Nas, Tyrese, and Luke James makes some small role appearances.
“Black Nativity” will feature traditional Christmas carols sung gospel style, and in the trailer we witness Jennifer Hudson giving us an example of what we can expect from the film, which blows into theaters on Nov. 27.
