Jermaine Dupri’s influence in hip-hop reaches far and wide, and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his So So Def label, the revered producer/rapper threw a memorable concert at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre Saturday night, featuring So So Def artists Da Brat, Jagged Edge, Bow Wow, Xscape and many more. Jay-Z, Usher and Mariah Carey were also there to celebrate the momentous occasion.
This event featured performances from the past and present. It was only fitting that Kris Kross started the party off with their ’92 chart topper, Jump. “Kris Kross wasn’t actually on So So Def” but was on Ruffhouse, “which is the same label as Cypress Hill and all of them,” Dupri explained on a recent visit to RapFix Live. “These guys at Ruffhouse gave me an opportunity to put out my first group and that was the springboard to get my company off.”
Other performances from the ’90s included two members of Xscape, sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott. Da Brat also turned it up with her hit Funkdafied, which made her the first female rapper to sell 1 million units.
Lil’ Jon’s set brought out the likes of Bone Crusher, YoungBloodZ, J-Kwon, Lil Scrappy, Dem Franchize Boyz, Pastor Troy and Bow Wow. Lil Jon also had a little fun with his performance and brought out head honcho J.D. for a DJ battle. He also joined Nelly for a performance of Grillz and joined Jay-Z to perform Money Ain’t A Thang. Hov also performed PSA and N—-s in Paris, in addition spitting lines from Clique.
