Kim Kardashian’s gun photo on Twitter has sparked tons of controversy and fans are torn between defending Kim or throwing her under the bus.
A little more than a month ago our nation faced the terrible tragedy of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Since then the debate over gun control has reached new heights.
While some citizens are urging the government to reform gun control, others believe the guns aren’t the problem and that every American should still have the right to own whatever weapon they want.
With the heated debate over gun laws going on, Kim Kardashian decided now was the perfect time to post a picture on Twitter of a sparkly new accessory – a designer handgun.
It’s unclear if the gun actually belongs to the reality star, but the photo itself was enough to have Twitter users up in arms.
“Kim Kardashian is quite dense, isn’t she,” one Twitter user wrote. “Pledging to support the gun control movement and then uploading pictures of designer handguns.”
It wasn’t along ago that Kanye’s girlfriend was on Twitter promoting the push for gun control reform and asking her many followers to sign a pledge with her online.
“Today, people in Newtown are making #sandyhookpromise to reduce gun violence,” she tweeted on Jan. 14. “Sign the pledge with me at http://www.sandyhookpromise.org.”
Now it seems she can’t get enough of the guns as long as their pretty enough.
The question remains, however, is it so bad that the American socialite simply posted a picture of a handgun?
“Kim Kardashian posted a pic of a gun on Instagram & now everyone is all pissed off,” another user wrote. “I forgot the 2nd amendment didn’t count for celebs.”
It seems like most people don’t have a problem with the curvaceous beauty owning a gun, but rather the principles she might be promoting by posting the picture as if it were nothing more than handbag rather than a handgun.
“@KimKardashian you have too much influence to be this blind and ignorant,” another user wrote. “Innocent children & people still die even if the gun is pretty.”
Others just felt like it was terrible timing for the picture.
“@kimkardashian seriously. When everyone is debating gun control, this is what you post – as if it’s just a fun accessory?”
Kimmy didn’t respond to the backlash but she did take the photo down immediately.
Of course, it was already too late because the picture had already become the talk of Twitter.
This isn’t the first time she’s shared her love of designer guns either.
Back in November she shared a pic of her shooting a gun at a gun range with the caption “Bang bang.”
In June, she shared another designer weapon when she posted a picture of a YSL designed handgun.
No matter where you stand on the gun reform debate, the issue with the photos is more of how it portrays guns – not the fact that she has a gun.
Tweeting pictures of pretty guns may cause some her followers to take the lethal weapons less seriously and want to purchase them simply for the visual appeal of having a diamond encrusted handgun.
With Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, and other social media sites encouraging teens and young adults to post pictures of their flashy possessions for the sake of “likes” or “retweets” we wouldn’t be surprised if a Kardashian fan rushed out to get her hands on some pink bedazzled gun just to take a cool picture with it.
Either way, it’s definitely too soon to be posting pictures of guns on the internet for no apparent reason and that’s simply from a PR standpoint.
Then again, Kimmy is no stranger to posting controversial tweets anyway.
Over the summer the middle Kardashian sister tweeted “Praying for everyone in Israel” while the country was in the midst of experienced heightened violence with Palestine.
After her millions of followers expressed their anger with her she not only removed the tweet but she replaced it with, “Praying for Palestine.”
The quick flip flop of support only showed that she was relatively ignorant about what was going on in the first place and perhaps shouldn’t have been tweeting anything about the situation until she did her research.
Eventually she deleted both tweets and promised her fans that she would do her best to be more educated on controversial hot buttons before voicing her opinion.
