Funnyman Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live, Hotel Transylvania) has been slated to host the 2013 Indie Spirit Awards. In addition to his mainstream acting gigs, Samberg also started in the indie film, Celeste and Jesse Forever, alongside Rashida Jones, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year. The LA Times confirms Samberg will be hosting the event in Santa Monica on February 23, 2013. This permiere American independent film awards show will kick off awards season this February. Last year the Indie Spirit Awards winners paralleled the Academy Award wins, with The Artist sweeping in nearly every category
Last year’s show was helmed by Seth Rogen, another notoriously hilarious actor. The Spirit awards are known fortheir laid back vibe, and Rogen took creative liberty to poke fun at fellow celebrities. His routine was laced with a solid number of expletives and jabs at everyone, from Mel Gibson to Chris Brown. The show has pretty low ratings on IFC, but there’s no doubt those in attendance feel as though they’re at an A-list comedy club. While Samberg is sure to poke fun, it’s fair to say that no host will be nearly as critical as the notorious Ricky Gervais. Gervais hosted the Golden Globes for the past two years, despite mixed reactions from his line crossing jokes. As we mentioned earlier this year, his post as Golden Globes host has been overtaken by the two arguably most hilarious women in the world, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
Looks like the veteran Saturday Night Live actors are taking over television, movies, and now hosting gigs. Sounds about right though, they do have the improv and comedic timing down to an art. There’s really no better man (or women) for the jobs.
