Keyshia Cole and Daniel Gibson Bring Black Love to Reality TV

R&B Singer Keyshia Cole and  her NBA player husband Daniel Gibson are giving fans a look inside their life in the new reality show “Keyshia Cole: Family First”  which premiered on Tuesday.

The show, shot in Atlanta, coincides with production of Keyshia’s fifth album “Woman to Woman.” Fans will get to see the recording process, which will include cameos of other big names in the music industry, as well as the singer’s wedding to Gibson and his difficult rehabilitation process. The wedding featured on the show takes place in Hawaii and is the couple’s second trip to the alter. The seemingly down-to-earth duo  had a small, private ceremony in Vegas several months prior. The show will air on Tuesdays at 10pm ET on BET.

Gibson, who is just getting back on the court after recovering from foot surgery, told “The Cleveland Plain Dealer” that he was excited about the show. “I just think, for some reason, family is not big in America anymore. It seems like people have become real materialistic. When they see us, I’m hoping it gives hope to a family atmosphere.”

Cole’s previous reality-show “The Way It Is” aired from 2006 to 2008. On that show, Keyshia focused on her tumultuous relationship with her mother, who put her up for adoption, and her sister, who remained with her mother. The show’s raw emotion and the antics of Keyshia’s chemically impaired mom Frankie, endeared the R&B singer to viewers, many of whom in some way could relate to the singer’s family issues. Just like her heartbreak hits.

Cole’s debut album, “The Way it Is” went platinum when it was released in 2005. Her second and third albums also went platinum. Cole took a two year hiatus after that, then released her fourth album in 2010. The Oakland, California native was introduced to the music industry at the age of 12 when she recorded with rapper MC Hammer. The singer/songwriter says her latest project will come from a different place because she is happy being a mother and wife.

Said Gibson of  married life: “No person is perfect, but you work together. You work it out, you stick it out…that’s what makes a family work. The name says it all.”
