The New York Jets might have to go against the Pittsburgh Steelers and their strong passing attack without Darrelle Revis, one of the top defensive backs in the NFL.
has a ”mild concussion,” the team announced, and his status for the game at Pittsburgh on Sunday was uncertain.
”He seems to be feeling good,” coach Rex Ryan said, adding that the team will always err on the side of caution with head injuries. A player can’t practice or play until he is cleared by the team doctor and the team’s independent neurological consultant.
”Whatever those (baseline test) scores are, apparently that’s low,” Ryan said. ”I’ll lean on the doctors and trainers. We’ll see how he progresses during the week.”
Ryan said later on ESPN New York 98.7 that Revis attended all of the team meetings Monday and appeared fine.
Revis was injured midway through the fourth quarter of the Jets’ 48-28 victory over the Buffalo Bills when he landed on his stomach when he dived to tackle C.J. Spiller and was then accidentally kicked in the head by teammate Bart Scott. Revis stayed down or a few moments as trainers ran out to tend to him.
He remained on the sideline for a few moments with his helmet on as trainers talked with him before eventually heading into the locker room.
Revis was walking around in the locker room, talking with teammates after the game, but didn’t speak with the media, per the NFL’s policy for players with head injuries. He also wasn’t made available Monday.
Despite having a concussion, Revis will be allowed to play Sunday if he is medically cleared. The Steelers will pose a serious threat to the secondary with the speedy Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders.
If Revis, considered by many the best cornerback in the league, can’t go, Kyle Wilson would start opposite Antonio Cromartie in his place. Revis helped set up the Jets’ first score Sunday with a diving interception, while Wilson picked off Ryan Fitzpatrick to set up New York’s second touchdown.
”When you have a player of Darrelle’s capability and Darrelle’s status on this team, that’s not just something that can be replaced by one guy,” linebacker Aaron Maybin said. ”Everybody has to step it up, from the guys that come in to fill in at his position to the guys like myself, we’ve got to put more heat on the quarterback.”
Revis has missed just three games in his five-plus seasons in the NFL, all in 2010.
