Is Nicki Minaj for real, or is she just kicking up controversy?
Those are the questions surroundings Nicki Minaj’s verses on the Lil Wayne mix of “Mercy.” On the song, in the midst of talking about how fabulous she is—using language so crude it might make a sailor blush—Minaj drops this gem about her political preferences:
“I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney, you lazy b—-es are f—ing up the economy.”
As the Wall Street Journal (yes, the Wall Street Journal) pointed out, in the same rap Minaj also talks about hanging out with zombies so it’s not clear how seriously we should take her political proclamation.
The Wall Street Journal actually called Minaj’s people for further clarification—perhaps to test Minaj’s familiarity with the Republican platform passed in Tampa—but got no response.
A native of Trinidad, Minaj was born in Queens and heretofore has shown no particular interest in politics, at least not so publicly.
Minaj may have the chance to explain more of her political views to a national television audience as one of the judges on “American Idol”—if all the recent reports are to be believed.
