Henry Cavill Explains His Approach To Superman in The 'Man Of Steel'

Rising star Henry Cavill sat down with Cineplex magazine to talk about his upcoming role as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

Cavill said he ignored the first phone call from Snyder because the caller ID said it was an unknown number.

“There’s no better feeling than to get that call,” Cavill says. “Actually, I was at home when the phone rang. It was an unknown number and I ignored it, then looked down and saw it was Zack Snyder. I was like ‘Oh my God!’ and he’d hung up at that stage. Fortunately, he called back.”

In the Man of Steel teasers released by Warner Bros., we get a glimpse of Snyder’s  realistic approach to Superman and how different it is from the 2006 mistake(Superman Returns). Cavil attempts to win skeptical fans by breaking down what he did to make his Superman more believable.

“What I can say is that it’s a modernization of the character and a very realistic view of one, obviously, very fantastic individual,” he says. “It’s an unreal situation, but it’s approached from a very practical viewpoint. We wanted to make the character easier to identify with.”

Cavill didn’t grow up reading Superman comic in his small town in the English Channel where he was born, But he knew right away how important it was to play the most beloved comic book character of all time.

“It’s important to do the role justice.  There are a lot of people relying on me to do this well. I gladly accept that responsibility, and it’s a great one to have because it’s a wonderful opportunity. I don’t let the pressures get to me because that’s going to hinder my performance and, therefore, let people down. So I choose to ignore the pressure side of it and focus on doing justice to Superman.”

Man Of Steel co-stars include Kevin Costner, Lawrence Fishburne, Russel Crowe, Amy Adams, Christopher Meloni and Diane Lane.

Superman flies into theaters June 14, 2013.
