New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda has been charged with driving under the influence after his arrest early Monday morning in Tampa, Fla.
Pineda, who has been in Tampa at the Yankees spring training site as he recovers from shoulder surgery, was arrested at 2:35 a.m. and released on $500 bond, according to the police report. His blood alcohol level was .128, well over the .08 limit.
The right-hander, acquired by the Yankees in an offseason trade with the Mariners, hasn’t pitched in the majors this year.
The report indicated the Nissan SUV he was driving was traveling “at a high rate of speed and weaving from side to side, crossing the lane markers.” The arresting officer wrote in the report that Pineda’s eyes were red, glassy and watery and that he smelled “the distinct odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.”
The report also indicated Pineda’s eyes were red, glassy and watery and that the arresting officer smelled “the distinct odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.”
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman declined to comment.
Pineda, 23, went 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA for the Mariners during his All-Star rookie season, but a torn labrum in his right shoulder sidelined him for this year.
