Anthony Mackie in Talks to Play The Falcon in Next ‘Captain America’ Movie

The recent Marvel comic book film adaptations have been jaw-dropping– especially this year’s smash hit The Avengers. Marvel Studios has also teased that they may release a film centered on the first superhero of African descent with the character Black Panther. At Comic-Con last week in San Diego, a bigger bombshell was hinted at with the news that The Hurt Locker actor Anthony Mackie is in talks to play Marvel’s first African-American superhero, the Falcon, in the next Captain America movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel announced the title of the new flick, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, starring Chris Evans. Mackie is in negotiations to play Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, a Black superhero from New York who left a life a crime to become one of Captain America’s closest friends; Falcon was Marvel’s first African-American superhero. Wilson is always present with his trusty falcon, Redwing, in which he has a telepathic link with and has the ability to fly thanks to a winged harness created by Black Panther’s technologically advanced laboratories after his first costume was destroyed.

The handsome and talented Mackie is busy this year, currently starring onscreen in the film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. This fall, he’ll also appear in the all-star crime movie Gangster Squad along with two more possible titles.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for an April 4, 2014 release.
