HBO will be the home of Nic Pizzolatto’s True Detective, a cop drama starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, according to a Deadline report.
The premium cable network ordered eight straight-to-series episodes that will follow the re-investigation of a bizarre 1995 murder, using the detective testimonies to frame the story.
McConaughey and Harrelson play detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, respectively. They join forces to find a ruthless serial killer in the streets of Louisiana. Written by Pizzolatto, the first eight episodes will be directed by Cary Fukunaga.
The concept is to use the first eight episodes to resolve the first bizarre case, with subsequent seasons using the same template but new characters and story.
Anonymous Contents‘ own Richard Brown, Steve Golin, and Brad Dorros will executive produce.
This will mark McConaughey’s first TV series commitment. For Harrelson this will be his first return to TV since his last role as Woody Boyd on Cheers.
Production is set to begin immediately in Louisiana.
