UPDATE-Kim Kardashian isn’t exactly known for her philanthropic efforts, which is probably why many media outlets were calling her recent trip to earthquake stricken Haiti another ruse used to save her faltering image. But Kim is crying foul, claiming the media has things backwards because her visit was only intended to encourage humanitarian relief to a country in desperate need.
Highlighted during a recent episode of Kourtney and Kim Take New York, Kim claimed she traveled to Haiti in order to learn more about Maria Bello’s (actress from Prime Suspects) charity. Kim was joined by mom/manger Kris Jenner who tagged along to support Kim’s efforts. Kim later posted on her blog that the experiences were totally life changing and enriching.
“Our mission was to learn more about actress Maria Bello’s charity, We Advance, meet the Haitian people who have made such amazing progress since the devastating earthquake in 2010, and celebrate the women of Haiti, who inspired me more than I ever could have anticipated.”
However, the timing of Kim’s attempt at altruism had some speculating that her motives may not have been completely pure. Kim is in the middle of a very messy divorce from Kris Humphries and rumors that her celebrity empire is fake and unfounded continuously cloud the web. The National Enquirer even wrote that Kim’s visit to Haiti was nothing more than a fashion show where the embattled ‘Keeping up with the Kardashian’ star spent loads of money on expensive cloths and jewelry.
When Kim returned from the island to learn that her intentions were questioned, she quickly went back to her blog to voice her displeasure.
“While my experience was completely life-changing… a very emotional and surprisingly positive journey that I will never forget, some media outlets have tried to tarnish the motive behind my visit and have written completely ridiculous and untrue things.”
Kim continued; “The National Enquirer wrote that I went to a fashion show in Haiti and then spent a fortune pampering myself! The truth is that I was at the Haitian Artisan Fair, where the amazing men and women who make their jewelry and crafts sell them to visitors to make a living, and I bought some beautiful jewelry after the fashion show!! Reading this made me so disappointed in the media.”
But The National Enquirer appears to be standing by story further claiming Kim not only stayed in a hotel suite which cost $1,000 per night, she traveled with a crew of photographers and bodyguards and avoided many of Haiti’s more impoverish refugee camps.
According to the Enquirer, a source went on to confirm Kim’s insensitive behavior by stating;
“The whole trip was a sham. It’s like Kim turned a blind eye to Haiti’s real issues – poverty and hunger. All she did was rub shoulders with the nation’s elite. She showed no interest in the plight of our people. It was a scandalous waste of time and money.”
Kim didn’t much address the rumors regarding her expensive hotel stay and her intrusive entourage; but she did have this to add regarding The Enquirer’s claims;
“The journalists obviously didn’t bother to do their research and instead published a ridiculous story to sell copies. I have become accustomed to dealing with rumors and lies spread about my family or my relationships, and have learned to ignore it to a certain extent. But when a magazine makes the decision to twist the truth and write lies like that, it belittles the entire experience we had in Haiti, and I won’t let them do that.”
So what do you think? Does the media have it wrong on this one and Kim Kardashian was actually attempting to help the people of Haiti…or was it simply another failed attempt to salvage an image continually tarnished by her own disingenuous actions?
