UPDATE-From Jennifer Lopez to Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana to Kim Kardashian–and every member of the “Basketball Wives” cast–the one thing that Hollywood continues to make clear is this: If we want marriage advice, marriage guidance and marriage role models, the LAST place we should look is to Hollywood. That's because the things that marriages need to work–a semblance of a routine, a minimum of temptation, a scarcity of drama, an abundance of stability, a modicum of trust–are exactly the things that are in short supply in a typical Hollywood marriage. With each new report of celebrity love blooming, we get reeled in. This looks like the one that will last forever. After all, we think, (1) they look like they are SO much in love, every time we see them pictured together; (2) they seem so perfect for each other–both of them are famous and beautiful; and (3) they have all the money in the world, which, to those of us in regular marriages out here in the real world–where money often seem to be the beginning, middle and end of our relationship troubles–sounds like the perfect formula for a perfect union. But soon–sometimes as soon as 72 days later, in the case of Kim Kardashian–the reports begin to trickle out. There is trouble in paradise. Despite ourselves, we delve into the stories, looking for a smoking gun, an easy explanation for why this one turned sour. But I contend that the typical Hollywood marriage is the opposite of a real relationship. If they DON’T end in abject failure, we should be shocked. In a marriage with a chance of success, both partners need to spend most of their days far away from the shiny apple of temptation. Marc Anthony was married to Miss Universe, the achingly beautiful Dayanara Torres. Is it possible to trade up from Miss Universe? It is if you’re Marc Anthony. Enter Jenny from the Bronx, the World’s Most Beautiful Woman (according to People magazine). At some point, married men in the rest of the world move on, beyond the beautiful face. It’s not clear that ever happens in Marc Anthony’s world. Or Ashton Kutcher’s. (But I concede that married men in the rest of the world don’t have to worry about Jennifer Lopez, or a Jennifer Lopez equivalent, throwing us a fetching smile on an hourly basis.) A strong marriage needs stability, a predictable routine. Sure, spontaneity has its place, but you need to know your partner has your back at all times, that you can rely on him/her to be there to support you, physically and emotionally. I’ve never been involved with a Hollywood star, but emotional stability is not the first description that comes to mind when talking about our leading actors and actresses. I’ll never forget reading a magazine profile of Jada Pinkett Smith, who was talking about how she and Will Smith keep their marriage hot. She said that she had recently been at a fancy hotel far from home, having a fun-filled getaway weekend with her girlfriends. She was pleasantly surprised after she arrived when she was crossing the hotel lobby and bumped into her husband, who was there to de-stress for the weekend during the filming of an intense movie. She ditched her girlfriends for the night so they could get together for some passionate, unexpected sex. I was floored. She made it sound so normal to stumble across your spouse in a hotel lobby, not even realizing how that sounded to us mere mortals in the real world, where most of us have our own spousal GPS systems to track their every movement. I don’t know whether all the rumors are true about the rocky state of the Will-Jada marriage, but when I read that article I wondered how long a marriage could possibly last if you didn’t even know you were staying at the same hotel as your spouse. I’m just saying. When we need some marital role models, I think most of us would be well advised to stay far away from Hollywood and focus our attention on the real world.
