The iconic trio of the Powerpuff Girls are becoming a quartet — and rumors are swirling that the new member is full of Black girl magic!
Cartoon Network teased the fourth member of the pint-sized superheroes Monday, Sept. 11.
Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup will meet the new Powerpuff Girl during “The Powerpuff Girls: Power of Four” a five-part movie debuting Sunday, Sept. 17, at 5:30 p.m. ET/PT. The flick will see the kindergarteners unite with their new partner in crime to defend Townsville from evil villains.
The announcement comes after South African singer Toya Delazy confessed on Instagram Thursday, Sept. 7 that “history was made.”
“I have always dreamed of being the voice of a cartoon character,” Delazy said to Animation Magazine. Never did I think I would be recording a voiceover as the new Powerpuff Girl for Cartoon Network, though! In a nutshell, Cartoon Network was my childhood. The shows were always quirky, expressive, creative and cool! I have always appreciated how creative the channel is, even to this day.
“Watching Cartoon Network really opened my mind as a child, and for me, the channel still represents creativity in all aspects of the word. The shows are bold, unexpected, energetic and exciting — definitely a brand that I can identify with and relate to.”
